1. Alone or in a group of six in solitude
Our night tied with yearning
١. أُحادٌ أَم سُداسٌ في أُحادِ
لُيَيلَتُنا المَنوطَةُ بِالتَنادِ
2. As if shrouded daughters in their darkness
Travelers' tents in mourning
٢. كَأَنَّ بَناتِ نَعشٍ في دُجاها
خَرائِدُ سافِراتٌ في حِدادِ
3. I think of confronting fate
With cavalry whose advance the valleys fuel
٣. أُفَكِّرُ في مُعاقَرَةِ المَنايا
وَقودِ الخَيلِ مُشرِفَةَ الهَوادي
4. My will set on the narrow path
By shedding the blood of cities and wilds
٤. زَعيمٌ لِلقَنا الخَطِّيِّ عَزمي
بِسَفكِ دَمِ الحَواضِرِ وَالبَوادي
5. How long this lagging and procrastination
And how long this persistence in persistence
٥. إِلى كَم ذا التَخَلُّفُ وَالتَواني
وَكَم هَذا التَمادي في التَمادي
6. And the soul's preoccupation from seeking glory
By selling poetry in a stagnant market
٦. وَشُغلُ النَفسِ عَن طَلَبِ المَعالي
بِبَيعِ الشِعرِ في سوقِ الكَسادِ
7. Neither my past youth can be regained
Nor a day that's passed retrieved
٧. وَما ماضي الشَبابِ بِمُستَرَدٍّ
وَلا يَومٌ يَمُرُّ بِمُستَعادِ
8. When my eyes glimpsed the whiteness of old age
It found it among the blackness
٨. مَتى لَحَظَت بَياضَ الشَيبِ عَيني
فَقَد وَجَدَتهُ مِنها في السَوادِ
9. When after transcendence I increased
My decrease occurred in my increase
٩. مَتى ما اِزدَدتُ مِن بَعدِ التَناهي
فَقَد وَقَعَ اِنتِقاصي في اِزدِيادي
10. Shall I be content to live without repaying
The prince for his great favors
١٠. أَأَرضى أَن أَعيشَ وَلا أُكافي
عَلى ما لِلأَميرِ مِنَ الأَيادي
11. May God reward well the journey toward him
Though he left horses like the stalls
١١. جَزى اللَهُ المَسيرَ إِلَيهِ خَيراً
وَإِن تَرَكَ المَطايا كَالمَزادِ
12. So Ibn Ibrahim did not meet me
With a day's ration for locusts
١٢. فَلَم تَلقَ اِبنَ إِبراهيمَ عَنسي
وَفيها قوتُ يَومٍ لِلقُرادِ
13. Was there not a distant land between us
That made its length the width of proximity
١٣. أَلَم يَكُ بَينَنا بَلَدٌ بَعيدٌ
فَصَيَّرَ طولَهُ عَرضَ النِجادِ
14. And made our nearness like remoteness
And our closeness like distance
١٤. وَأَبعَدَ بُعدَنا بُعدَ التَداني
وَقَرَّبَ قُربَنا قُربَ البِعادِ
15. Yet when I came to him at my utmost
He seated me atop the fierce lions
١٥. فَلَمّا جِئتُهُ أَعلى مَحَلّي
وَأَجلَسَني عَلى السَبعِ الشِدادِ
16. He gleamed before I greeted him
Casting his wealth before the pillows
١٦. تَهَلَّلَ قَبلَ تَسليمي عَلَيهِ
وَأَلقى مالَهُ قَبلَ الوِسادِ
17. We blame you, O Ali, though guiltless
Because you were kind to people
١٧. نَلومُكَ يا عَلِيُّ لِغَيرِ ذَنبٍ
لِأَنَّكَ قَد زَرَيتَ عَلى العِبادِ
18. And you do not bestow on a steed
Your gifts for it to be called generous
١٨. وَأَنَّكَ لا تَجودُ عَلى جَوادٍ
هِباتُكَ أَن يُلَقَّبَ بِالجَوادِ
19. As if Islam fears your munificence
Lest it end in apostasy
١٩. كَأَنَّ سَخاءَكَ الإِسلامُ تَخشى
إِذا ما حُلتَ عاقِبَةَ اِرتِدادِ
20. As if the shields in coats of mail are eyes
With your swords molded from sheaths
٢٠. كَأَنَّ الهامَ في الهَيجا عُيونٌ
وَقَد طُبِعَت سُيوفُكَ مِن رُقادِ
21. You have attuned tongues from anxieties
So naught occurs to them but hearts
٢١. وَقَد صُغتَ الأَسِنَّةَ مِن هُمومٍ
فَما يَخطُرنَ إِلّا في فُؤادِ
22. The day you summoned them, forelocks disheveled
Tied in plaits for pursuit
٢٢. وَيَومَ جَلَبتَها شُعثَ النَواصي
مُعَقَّدَةَ السَبائِبِ لِلطِرادِ
23. And ruin befell a people
Who in Al Ladhiqiyah tyrannized
٢٣. وَحامَ بِها الهَلاكُ عَلى أُناسِ
لَهُم بِاللاذِقِيَّةِ بَغيُ عادِ
24. So the West was a sea of waters
And the East a sea of steeds
٢٤. فَكانَ الغَربُ بَحراً مِن مِياهٍ
وَكانَ الشَرقُ بَحراً مِن جِيادِ
25. Over which your banners fluttered
Tossing in white mourning
٢٥. وَقَد خَفَقَت لَكَ الراياتُ فيهِ
فَظَلَّ يَموجُ بِالبيضِ الحِدادِ
26. They met you with camel livers, the white-eyed,
So you quenched them, the sword's edge sharp
٢٦. لَقوكَ بِأَكبُدِ الإِبلِ الأَبايا
فَسُقتَهُمُ وَحَدُّ السَيفِ حادِ
27. You tore the garb of error off them
And clothed them in guidance
٢٧. وَقَد مَزَّقتَ ثَوبَ الغَيِّ عَنهُم
وَقَد أَلبَستُهُم ثَوبَ الرَشادِ
28. Thus they did not leave authority by choice
Or feign your affection out of affection
٢٨. فَما تَرَكوا الإِمارَةَ لِاِختِيارٍ
وَلا اِنتَحَلوا وِدادَكَ مِن وِدادِ
29. Nor fall in ascetic disdain of glory
Or yield happily in yielding
٢٩. وَلا اِستَفَلوا لِزُهدٍ في التَعالي
وَلا اِنقادوا سُروراً بِاِنقِيادِ
30. Rather, your fear blew through their insides
Like the wind in a locust's leg
٣٠. وَلَكِن هَبَّ خَوفُكَ في حَشاهُم
هُبوبَ الريحِ في رِجلِ الجَرادِ
31. And they died before their deaths, so when
You pardoned, you revived them before the Return
٣١. وَماتوا قَبلَ مَوتِهِمُ فَلَمّا
مَنَنتَ أَعَدتَهُم قَبلَ المَعادِ
32. You sheathed blades which, had they not repented,
Would have erased them like erasure
٣٢. غَمَدتَ صَوارِماً لَو لَم يَتوبوا
مَحَوتَهُمُ بِها مَحوَ المِدادِ
33. For passing fury, though intense,
Is not half your enduring nobility
٣٣. وَما الغَضَبُ الطَريفُ وَإِن تَقَوّى
بِمُنتَصِفٍ مِنَ الكَرَمِ التِلادِ
34. Let not tongues of partisans deceive you
Their hearts foes though they be friends
٣٤. فَلا تَغرُركَ أَلسِنَةٌ مَوالٍ
تُقَلِّبُهُنَّ أَفإِدَةٌ أَعادي
35. Be like death, heeding no mourner
Who weeps from it, though it is unfeeling
٣٥. وَكُن كَالمَوتِ لا يَرثي لِباكٍ
بَكى مِنهُ وَيَروي وَهوَ صادِ
36. For the wound surely heals after a time
If the building's based on ruin
٣٦. فَإِنَّ الجُرحَ يَنفِرُ بَعدَ حينٍ
إِذا كانَ البِناءُ عَلى فَسادِ
37. And water flows even from solidity
And fire comes even from flint
٣٧. وَإِنَّ الماءَ يَجري مِن جَمادٍ
وَإِنَّ النارَ تَخرُجُ مِن زِنادِ
38. How can a coward sleep at ease
When you line his side with prickly chaff
٣٨. وَكَيفَ يَبيتُ مُضطَجِعاً جَبانٌ
فَرَشتَ لِجِنبِهِ شَوكَ القَتادِ
39. Seeing your spear in both his dreams
Fearing he'll see it while awake
٣٩. يَرى في النَومِ رُمحَكَ في كُلاهُ
وَيَخشى أَن يَراهُ في السُهادِ
40. You ordered Abu al-Husayn with praise of folk
Amongst whom I arrived without provision
٤٠. أَشَرتَ أَبا الحُسَينِ بِمَدحِ قَومٍ
نَزَلتُ بِهِم فَسِرتُ بِغَيرِ زادِ
41. And they thought I'd praised them long ago
While you were my purpose in praising them
٤١. وَظَنّوني مَدَحتُهُم قَديماً
وَأَنتَ بِما مَدَحتُهُمُ مُرادي
42. I shall leave you the day after tomorrow
My heart leaves not your courtyard
٤٢. وَإِنّي عَنكَ بَعدَ غَدٍ لَغادِ
وَقَلبي عَن فِنائِكَ غَيرُ غادِ
43. Loving you wherever my mount takes me
Your guest wherever in the lands I was
٤٣. مُحِبُّكَ حَيثُما اِتَّجَهَت رِكابي
وَضَيفُكَ حَيثُ كُنتُ مِنَ البِلادِ
