Beyond their litters, their entourage is a band

4. Whose livers—while they stand—race.
They stopped, and the hearts’ interiors brimmed with sorrow

5. As they were filled, and the vessels of tears poured out.
They bid each other soft farewells—one who sighs is released

6. And one who sighs from an outbreath and one who speaks low.
They grasped their livers with their hands

7. While yearning wrests from a hand what it grasps.
When they felt secure from observers they complained

8. Of their sorrows, but if they mistrusted, they turned away.
They left, and the views of the weeping behind them

9. Were scattered—pouring down copious tears.
I followed them a breath and a fiery tear

10. That scorches the cheeks, and its water calms.
Who will keep my reddened camel company

11. That fell behind the traveling band when they pulled away?
She did not turn back or catch up with them

12. Until she collapsed from all her stumbling and rising.
Can you see their glances—did they pierce

13. The heart of whoever they pierced with those arrows?
Yes, I have consented to what they shed of my blood

14. Deliberately, provoking the tribe—but are they pleased?
Their farewell sips were pure drink, and yet they

15. Were bitter when they bid me farewell.
They spent the night with tranquil hearts while we

16. Had among them, because of the estrangement, the grumbling sick one.
O friend! You are the counsellor for what has happened

17. Of the events of time, and the rouser of determination—
I complain to you of enduring youths who aid

18. My blood with lightning that flashes after weakness dims.
So who should be blamed for the beach stones—heat lightning

19. Like the blink of sand when it flickers?
Restless lightning, his eyes do not close

20. At night, nor do they let the stones slumber.
At night, fine robes were laid out for him on sweet ardour

21. That disappear for an instant, then are torn.
He brought the darkness to life with a pulse, and he destroyed me—but he

22. Did not diminish his brightness, while passion within me pulses.
With the curvature of the roe deer, they were alive, swirling

23. In the heart—the towers of misfortunes—and settled.
And I had called, while the face of my passion turned

24. Toward them, and the face of patience turned from me.
Return him alive by returning him! Or join

25. Me completely with him! For the living are not severed.
With returning him, breathe life! And replace

26. My sorrow with distance—for they have replaced.
They did not grow used to the bosom of the loved ones, but rather

27. They roamed the quarters of conscience and gathered.
O friend! Will a granter grant composure

28. Or will a lender lend me equanimity?
And I refuse! Help has indeed gone

29. And there remains in my hand no hilt of composure.
I am emptied of the supplies of equanimity—what can

30. Remain in the wake of supplies being emptied out?
O friend! Do composure and calm
