1. To you, O dwellings in hearts, dwellings
You are desolate, and your lovers have become disloyal
١. لَكِ يا مَنازِلُ في القُلوبِ مَنازِلُ
أَقفَرتِ أَنتِ وَهُنَّ مِنكِ أَواهِلُ
2. Only He knows that, though you do not know, but
It is you two the reasonable one weeps for
٢. يَعلَمنَ ذاكِ وَما عَلِمتِ وَإِنَّما
أَولاكُما يُبكى عَلَيهِ العاقِلُ
3. And I am the one whose eyes the cup of death has turned
So who is the accused and who is the killer?
٣. وَأَنا الَّذي اِجتَلَبَ المَنِيَّةَ طَرفُهُ
فَمَنِ المُطالَبُ وَالقَتيلُ القاتِلُ
4. The abodes are devoid of gazelles, and with him
Is a fleeting mirage of each female companion
٤. تَخلو الدِيارُ مِنَ الظِباءِ وَعِندَهُ
مِن كُلِّ تابِعَةٍ خَيالٌ خاذِلُ
5. The most cowardly of men has snatched them away with his forehead
And the most beloved to me, the miser, draws nearer
٥. اللاءِ أَفتَكُها الجَبانُ بِمُهجَتي
وَأَحَبُّها قُرباً إِلَيَّ الباخِلُ
6. The shooters at us, though they are very skilled
And the slanderers of us, though forgetfully inattentive
٦. الرامِياتُ لَنا وَهُنَّ نَوافِرٌ
وَالخاتِلاتُ لَنا وَهُنَّ غَوافِلُ
7. They compensated us for their coy glances with
Cords in other than dust, binds
٧. كافَأنَنا عَن شِبهِهِنَّ مِنَ المَها
فَلَهُنَّ في غَيرِ التُرابِ حَبائِلُ
8. There are wounders of the mouths of men, snarling
And from the spears, bloodstained and well-forged
٨. مِن طاعِني ثُغَرِ الرِجالِ جَآذِرٌ
وَمِنَ الرِماحِ دَمالِجٌ وَخَلاخِلُ
9. And so the name of eyelids covers are their shutters
Because they are made by the deeds of swords, carriers
٩. وَلِذا اِسمُ أَغطِيَةِ العُيونِ جُفونُها
مِن أَنَّها عَمَلَ السُيوفِ عَوامِلُ
10. How many stops have made you pine in longing after
The spy was fooled by us and the blamer drew near
١٠. كَم وَقفَةٍ سَجَرَتكَ شَوقاً بَعدَما
غَرِيَ الرَقيبُ بِنا وَلَجَّ العاذِلُ
11. Below embracing the two palm trees bent over
Like the effort of a sculptor, fully chiselled
١١. دونَ التَعانُقِ ناحِلَينِ كَشَكلَتَي
نَصبٍ أَدَقَّهُما وَصَمَّ الشاكِلُ
12. Yes, and pleasures are transient
If they have beginnings then they have ends
١٢. اِنعَم وَلَذَّ فَلِلأُمورِ أَواخِرٌ
أَبَداً إِذا كانَت لَهُنَّ أَوائِلُ
13. As long as you have the springtime of youth
The charms of youth are but a vanishing shadow
١٣. ما دُمتَ مِن أَرَبِ الحِسانِ فَإِنَّما
رَوقُ الشَبابِ عَلَيكَ ظِلٌّ زائِلُ
14. Frolic has a span, fleeting as if
It were a farewell kiss of a travelling beloved
١٤. لِلَّهوِ آوِنَةٌ تَمُرُّ كَأَنَّها
قُبَلٌ يُزَوَّدُها حَبيبٌ راحِلُ
15. Time has spoiled, so there is no pure sweetness
Nor complete joy that is unmarred
١٥. جَمَحَ الزَمانُ فَما لَذيذٌ خالِصٌ
مِمّا يَشوبُ وَلا سُرورٌ كامِلُ
16. Except Abu Al-Fadl ibn Abdullah, his
Delight of wishes and he is the lofty abode
١٦. حَتّى أَبو الفَضلِ اِبنُ عَبدِ اللَهِ رُؤ
يَتُهُ المُنى وَهيَ المَقامُ الهائِلُ
17. Well-trodden are my paths to it, around it
From his generosity in every rugged valley
١٧. مَمطورَةٌ طُرقي إِلَيها دونَها
مِن جودِهِ في كُلِّ فَجٍّ وابِلُ
18. Veiled with a canopy of awe
That turns away hardships, and the rider of transports
١٨. مَحجوبَةٌ بِسُرادِقٍ مِن هَيبَةٍ
تَثني الأَزِمَّةَ وَالمَطِيُّ ذَوامِلُ
19. For the sun within it, the winds, the clouds
And the seas, and the lions, features
١٩. لِلشَمسِ فيهِ وَلِلرِياحِ وَلِلسَحا
بِ وَلِلبِحارِ وَلِلأُسودِ شَمائِلُ
20. And in his presence are fruits and refinement
And water of life and death for wishes, streams
٢٠. وَلَدَيهِ مِلعِقيانِ وَالأَدَبِ المُفا
دِ وَمِلحَياةِ وَمِلمَماتِ مَناهِلُ
21. If it were not for the grazing livestock hosts surrounding him
The camel of the barren lands would roam to him
٢١. لَو لَم يُهَب لَجَبُ الوُفودِ حَوالَهُ
لَسَرى إِلَيهِ قَطا الفَلاةِ الناهِلُ
22. He knows what is within you before you show it to him
From his mind, and answers before you ask
٢٢. يَدري بِما بِكَ قَبلَ تُظهِرُهُ لَهُ
مِن ذِهنِهِ وَيُجيبُ قَبلَ تُسائِلُ
23. You see him intercepting and facing
Our eyelids, and they are confused when he reciprocates
٢٣. وَتَراهُ مُعتَرِضاً لَها وَمُوَلِّياً
أَحداقُنا وَتَحارُ حينَ يُقابِلُ
24. His words are clubs, and they are separators
under them are the joints of all sorrows
٢٤. كَلِماتُهُ قُضُبٌ وَهُنَّ فَواصِلٌ
كُلُّ الضَرائِبِ تَحتَهُنَّ مَفاصِلُ
25. His virtues defeated all virtues
As if the virtuous were mere ruins
٢٥. هَزَمَت مَكارِمُهُ المَكارِمَ كُلَّها
حَتّى كَأَنَّ المَكرُماتِ قَنابِلُ
26. They killed Dafr and Duhaym relentlessly
So do you see the mother of Duhaym or Dafr in labor?
٢٦. وَقَتَلنَ دَفراً وَالدُهَيمَ فَما تُرى
أُمُّ الدُهَيمِ وَأُمُّ دَفرٍ هابِلُ
27. The sign of scholars, an ocean
That has no end, and every ocean has a shore
٢٧. عَلّامَةُ العُلَماءِ وَاللُجُّ الَّذي
لا يَنتَهي وَلِكُلِّ لُجٍّ ساحِلُ
28. If the birth of every living being were like his
Women would give birth, though they have no midwives
٢٨. لَو طابَ مَولِدُ كُلِّ حَيٍّ مِثلَهُ
وَلَدَ النِساءُ وَما لَهُنَّ قَوابِلُ
29. If the fetus showed generosity through birth
The pregnant one would know, is it male or female?
٢٩. لَو بانَ بِالكَرَمِ الجَنينُ بَيانَهُ
لَدَرَت بِهِ ذَكَرٌ أَمُ اَنثى الحامِلُ
30. So that the sons of Hasan would increase in humility
Alas! Lighthouses are not concealed in darkness
٣٠. لِيَزِد بَنو الحَسَنِ الشِرافُ تَواضُعاً
هَيهاتَ تُكتَمُ في الظَلامِ مَشاعِلُ
31. They hid the dew, hiding the crow’s filth
So it appeared, and does the pouring rain hide?
٣١. سَتَروا النَدى سَترَ الغُرابِ سِفادَهُ
فَبَدا وَهَل يَخفى الرَبابُ الهاطِلُ
32. They strutted, yet they do not strut with their vanity
Traits of noble origin, the clearest proofs
٣٢. جَفَخَت وَهُم لا يَجفَخونَ بِهابِهِم
شِيَمُ عَلى الحَسَبِ الأَغَرِّ دَلائِلُ
33. The piety of their souls is alike, elder and younger
Chastity of loincloth, flapping
٣٣. مُتَشابِهِي وَرَعِ النُفوسِ كَبيرُهُم
وَصَغيرُهُم عَفُّ الإِزارِ حُلاحِلُ
34. Oh boast, for people are three in relation to you
One in awe, or envious, or ignorant
٣٤. يا اِفخَر فَإِنَّ الناسِ فيكَ ثَلاثَةٌ
مُستَعظِمٌ أَو حاسِدٌ أَو جاهِلُ
35. You have risen, so you care not after
They knew, does he praise or criticize the speaker?
٣٥. وَلَقَد عَلَوتَ فَما تُبالي بَعدَما
عَرَفوا أَيَحمَدُ أَم يَذُمُّ القائِلُ
36. I praise you, and if you wished, you would say to me
“You fell short,” so keeping quiet about me is attainment
٣٦. أُثني عَلَيكَ وَلَو تَشاءُ لَقُلتَ لي
قَصَّرتَ فَالإِمساكُ عَنّي نائِلُ
37. The eloquent do not dare recite a verse here
But I am the courageous composer
٣٧. لا تَجسُرُ الفُصَحاءُ تُنشِدُ هَهُنا
بَيتاً وَلَكِنّي الهِزَبرُ الباسِلُ
38. None of the people of the Jahiliya attained
My poetry, nor heard the sorcery of Babil
٣٨. ما نالَ أَهلُ الجاهِلِيَّةِ كُلُّهُم
شِعري وَلا سَمِعَت بِسِحرِيَ بابِلُ
39. And if deficiency comes to you from a critic
It is testimony that I am complete
٣٩. وَإِذا أَتَتكَ مَذَمَّتي مِن ناقِصٍ
فَهِيَ الشَهادَةُ لي بِأَنِّيَ كامِلُ
40. Who can I find to understand the ignoramuses of an era who claim
That the Indian among them is inferior?
٤٠. مَن لي بِفَهمِ أُهَيلِ عَصرٍ يَدَّعي
أَن يَحسُبَ الهِندِيَّ فيهِم باقِلُ
41. But by your right, which is the purpose of the sworn
The truth is you, and anything other than you is falsehood
٤١. وَأَما وَحَقِّكَ وَهوَ غايَةُ مُقسِمٍ
لِلحَقُّ أَنتَ وَما سِواكَ الباطِلُ
42. You are the pure one if purity meets you
And the water if you bathe, the washer
٤٢. الطيبُ أَنتَ إِذا أَصابَكَ طيبُهُ
وَالماءُ أَنتَ إِذا اِغتَسَلتَ الغاسِلُ
43. The tongue has not gone round the palate and flipped
A pen better than your fingers have done
٤٣. ما دارَ في الحَنَكِ اللِسانُ وَقَلَّبَت
قَلَماً بِأَحسَنَ مِن نَثاكَ أَنامِلُ
