سل الفلك الدوار إن كان ينطق
Ask the revolving sky if it can speak,
عصيت نذير الحلم في طاعة الجهل
I disobeyed the warner of wisdom in obedience to ignorance
لعزة هذي اللاهيات النواعم
For the honor of these gentle beauties
بأي غزال في الخدور تهيم
With what gazelle in the foliage are you infatuated,
كفى بالضنى عن سورة العذل ناهيا
Enough of blaming love for my decline
رب الفتوة لا تسبق إلى عذل
Lord of greatness, do not be quick to blame
لك روحي فاصنع بها ما تشاء
My friend, I have your soul, do with it what you will
ألا عاطنيها بنت كرم تزوجت
Behold she who was given in marriage
لقد صفرت عياب الود بيني
The desert's gloom between me and my loved ones grows
سلوا عن فوادي قبل شد الركائب
Ask about my heart before the departure of the caravans
لكل دمع من مقلة سبب
Every teardrop from my eyes deserves
أين أيام لذتي وشبابي
Where are the days of my pleasure and youth,
طرب الفؤاد وكان غير طروب
My heart was thrilled though not with joy,
إني إذا ما الخل خاس بعهده
When a friend breaks his promise after affection,
عدمت حمية وسقمت ودا
You lacked fervor and became ill with love
لا تبهت الشيطان في فعله
Do not be fooled by the devil and his acts
هل في الزمان لنا حكم فنشترط
Is there in time for us a rule we may dictate
إلى الله أشكو أنني بين معشر
I complain to God that I am among a people
بلغت مداك من أرب فسيحي
You have reached me at night
تولى الصبا عني فكيف أعيده
Youth has turned away from me, so how can I win it back
يا بن الذي رهن الخمار سبحته
O son of him who pawned his robe
أدي الرسالة يا عصفورة الوادي
Deliver the message, O bird of the valley
خليلي هل طال الدجى أم تقيدت
My friend, has the night grown long, or have
أرى نفحة دلت على كبدي الوجدا
I see a breeze blowing, revealing my inner passion,
أنا مصدر الكلم النوادي
I am the source of the eloquent word,
يا من إليه الوجوه خاشعة
O You to Whom faces are humbly turned
بلينا وسربال الزمان جديد
We have worn out, yet time's robe is ever new,
أربة العود أم قمرية السحر
The lute or the moon of enchantment
بناظرك الفتان آمنت بالسحر
With your alluring eyes I believed in magic
رمت بخيوط النور كهربة الفجر
She darted with threads of light like the radiance of dawn
تلاهيت إلا ما يجن ضمير
I have amused myself with naught but what would aggrieve my conscience
لمثل ذا اليوم كان الملك ينتظر
For a day like this the kingdom had long awaited,
أبى الشوق إلا أن يحن ضمير
Longing insisted my heart grow tender,
طربت وعادتني المخيلة والسكر
I was disturbed and imagination and intoxication returned to me,
لم أصطبر بعدك من سلوة
I have not found solace since you left
رجع الخديو لمصره
The Khedive returned to his Egypt
لئن فرقت ما بيننا شقة النوى
Even if fate's cruel hand has torn apart
لكل حي نذير من طبيعته
For every living being there is a warner in his nature
هل في الخلاعة والصبا من باس
Is there any harm in revelry and youth
أحمى الجزيرة مطلع الشمس
The sun rises over the island
متى يجد الإنسان خلا موافقا
When will a man find an intimate friend
أضن بصاحبي وأذود عنه
I cherish my friend and defend him
إذا كان أمر الله حتما مقدرا
If the decree of God is fate and destiny
ردي التحية يا مهاة الأجرع
Return the greeting, O Maha of fruitful bosom
لكل قول منار يستقيم به
Each word has a minaret that makes it upright
لبيك يا داعي الأشواق من داعي
I respond to your call, O summoner of passions, from a summoner
قليل بآداب المودة من يفي
Few fulfill the etiquette of friendship sincerely,
سكن الفؤاد وجفت الآماق
My heart found peace, and yearnings departed
عيني لبعدك أصبحت
My eyes for your absence have become
هل من طبيب لداء الحب أو راقي
Is there a doctor for the disease of love, or a healer
يا بانة من لي بضمك
Oh maiden with embrace I yearn
تالله لست بهالك جوعا ولا
By Allah you will not perish from hunger or nakedness
قلدت جيد المعالي حلية الغزل
I adorned the neck of sublime thoughts with the necklace of poetry,
ردوا علي الصبا من عصري الخالي
Give me back my youth from my empty days,
رد الصبا بعد شيب اللمة الغزل
Youth has returned after the graying of the temples,
تسابق في المكارم تعل قدراً
Race in virtues, you will gain esteem
أخو العلم في الدنيا لذي الجهل محوج
The ignorant's brother science in this world needs
دع المخافة واعلم أن صاحبها
Leave fear behind, and know that he who harbors it
حي مغنى الهوى بوادي الشآم
O harbinger of passion in the vale of Syria,
ذهب الصبا وتولت الأيام
The spring has left and the days have turned,
أي فتى للعظيم نندبه
What youth do we eulogize for the sublime one
له نظرتا جود وبأس أثارتا
He has a gaze of generosity and might that stirred
ألا من معيني على صاحب
Alas! Who will help me against a friend
كم غادر الشعراء من متردم
How many eminent poets have passed away,
أعد على السمع ذكر البان والعلم
Remind the hearing of the mention of al-Ban and al-Alam
ردي الكرى لأراك في أحلامه
Return the caravan so I can see you in its dreams
أي شيء يبقى على الحدثان
What remains for the vicissitudes
وملمس عفة قد نلت منه
And I touched a chaste caress I gained
لا تعكفن على المدام
Do not dwell too long on wine
هجوتك غير مبتدع مقالاً
My satire of you is not inventing discourse
زمزمي الكأس وهاتي
Pour me a cup, my mother,
سواي بتحنان الأغاريد يطرب
My friend is delighted by the singing of girls
ترحل من وادي الأراكة بالوجد
He departed from the valley of Arrakah lovesick,
أطعت الغي في حب الغواني
I obeyed passion in loving the beautiful maidens,
حنى الشيب عودي فاستقامت رويتي
Old age bent my stick so my throw went straight
سل حمام الأيك عني
Ask the dove about my sorrow
لأي خليل في الزمان أرافق
For which companion of present times shall I keep company,
لمصطفى صادق في الشعر منزلة
Mustafa has a high rank in sincere poetry
وليلة بضياء الكأس لامعة
And a night with the brilliance of a shining cup
وفاتنة الحديث لها نكات
The charmer of conversation, her wit delights,
كيف طوتك المنون يا ولدي
How did death wrap you, my son,
عم الحيا واستنت الجداول
The life flourished and the streams gushed
يا صارم اللحظ من أغراك بالمهج
O you with the piercing glance, who deceived you with tenderness
حويت من السوءات ما لو طرحته
You contain so much evil that if cast
بلوت إخاء الناس دهرا فلم أجد
I tested people's brotherhood for ages, but found no
سكوتي إذا دام الحديث كلام
My silence when talk goes on is my speech,
صبرت على ريب هذا الزمان
I endured the doubts of this age,
يسائلني عما كتمت من الهوى
My friend questions me about the love I've hidden
يا كوكب الصبح متى ينقضي
O morning star, when will the night's reign end?
إلام يهفو بحلمك الطرب
How tenderly has time dealt with you
وخميلة بكرت سماوة أيكها
O garden with virgin plants, Samawa's shelter,
متى ترد الهيم الخوامس منهلا
When will this barren desert bloom,
ومرتبع لذنا به غب سحرة
And a square where we delighted in the mysterious magic of night,
سل الجيزة الفيحاء عن هرمي مصر
Ask Giza, the splendid place, about Egypt's pyramids,
أضوء شمس فرى سربال ديجور
Is it the radiant light of a sun that appeared in the robe of morning?
ما لي بودك بعد اليوم إلمام
What use is your love to me after this day, you unfaithful one,
كيف أهجوك والدناءة سور
How can I woo you when baseness is a wall
قم هاتها والليل مال عموده
Rise, for night's pillar slants now to the west,
ما لقلبي من لوعة ليس يهدا
My heart bears an anguish unceasing,
خلعت في حب غزلان الحمى رسني
I fell passionately in love with the gazelles of ardour which emaciated me,
ألم تعلم وخير القول أبقى
Did you not know, and the best of speech is most enduring,
وذي خلال كأن الله صورها
With charms as though God had shaped her
أترك الدنيا فلست ترى
I leave this world, and you'll no more see
أيها الشاعر المجيد تدبر
O great and noble poet, be thoughtful
أدرالكأس يا نديم وهات
Pour me a cup, o boon companion, and bring it
أتخفر ذمتي وتروم عطفي
Do you violate my covenant and seek my affection?
ما أطول الليل على الساهر
How long is the night to the wakeful one!
عود فؤادك أن يكون مجنة
Accustom your heart to be a vault
أسلة سيف أم عقيقة بارق
Are they the gleaming blades of swords or the radiance of carnelian gems?
دع الهزل واحذر ترهات المنادمه
Give up jesting and beware the lures of drinking companions
وذي نعرات يقطع الأرض ساريا
With nostrils flaring, he crosses the land
ألا يا نحلة سرحت فحازت
Behold, O bee who ventured forth and gained
لا تحسب الناس في الدنيا على ثقة
Do not assume people in this world are reliable
أرى كل حي يظلم الدهر جهده
I see all living wrong time in their power
خل المراء لفتية الدرس
Leave arguing for the young students
لقد طال عهدي بالشباب وإنه
My youth has lingered long, though longing
هل بالحمى عن سرير الملك من يزع
Is there anyone who can wrest
أبعد ستين لي حاج فأطلبها
After sixty, what desire have I to seek?
إلى الله أشكو طول ليلي وجارة
To God I complain of endless night and a neighbor
أليس من العدل أن تسمعا
Is it not just that you both should hear me?
صلة الخيال على البعاد لقاء
The imagination's link to the horizons is a meeting
يا لك من ذي أدب
O you of such refinement
أمولاي دم للملك ربا تسوسه
My lord, blood for the kingdom with wisdom
لا عيش إلا للنفاد
No life but for the lucid
أنا في الدهر ضائع بين فهم
I wander lost in life mid comprehension
إذا ما كتمت الحب كان شرارة
When I conceal my love, it's a raging fire,
أهلال أرض أم هلال سماء
A crescent of land or a crescent of sky
بقلبي للهوى داء عجيب
My heart is stricken with a wondrous disease,
أتزعمني خلا وتهجر ساحتي
You think me an unfaithful friend, and spurn my abode,
لا أجازيك بالذي خضت فيه
I do not repay you for what you have said
لا تركنن إلى العدو فإنه
Do not incline towards the enemy, for he
وغد تكون من لؤم ومن دنس
And tomorrow is formed of vileness and of filth
سمع الخلي تأوهي فتلفتا
The cheeky one heard my sighs and turned about,
رضيت بالبين إيثارا على سكن
I chose separation out of preference over living
آه من غربة وفقد حبيب
Oh longing and missing my beloved
ظن الظنون فبات غير موسد
He suspected, so he slept uneasily
هو البين حتى لا سلام ولا رد
He is the separation, no greetings or response
سرى البرق مصريا فأرقني وحدي
The lightning flashed Egyptian, keeping me awake alone,
دع الذل في الدنيا لمن خاف حتفه
Leave humiliation in this world to those who fear death,
تأوب طيف من سميرة زائر
A specter from Samirah came to visit
يا رب بيضاء من الجواري
O Lord, a fair maid of noble race
أبى الضيم فاستل الحسام وأصحرا
He refused humiliation, so he unsheathed his sword,
أرى كل شيء عرضة للتغير
I see all things prone to change
للشعر في الدهر حكم لا يغيره
Poetry has in time an authority that nothing alters,
يلومونني في الجود والجود مزنة
They blame me for my generosity, yet generosity is a virtue
أنت مني ما بين فكر ولفظ
You are my thoughts and words
وذي نخوة نازعته الكأس موهنا
And one with pride, I contested the cup with him, surrendering,
يا رب ليل بت أسقى به
O Lord of the night whose drink I sip
لعمر أبيك ما خفت حصاتي
By your father's life, my stones did not quake
أين ليالينا بوادي الغضى
Where are our nights in the valley of passion?
سكرت بخمر حديثك الألفاظ
The words were intoxicated by the wine of your speech,
بكر الندى وترفع السدف
The dew glistened, the canopy rose high,
دعاني إلى غي الصبا بعد ما مضى
He called me to the folly of youth after it had passed,
رب خذ لي من العيون بحقي
My Lord, grant me sight of the eyes, by my right
لا تركنن إلى الزمان فربما
Do not rely on time, for often
عليل أنت مسقمه
You are ill, and wasted away,
لعمرك ما يدعى الفتى بين قومه
By your life, a young man is not called generous among his people
سبقت بالفضل فاسمع ما وحاه فمي
You preceded with virtue, so listen to what my mouth wished to confide,
أسل الديار عن الحبيب وفي الحشا
I ask the abodes about the beloved, while in the wilderness
غادة كالمهاة تهفو بخصر
A maiden sways with a supple waist
حبذا الراح في أوان البهار
The breeze delighted in the season of springtime
ألهتكم الدنيا عن الآخره
The world has distracted you from the hereafter
يموت معي سر الصديق ولحده
The secret of my friend dies with me, as does his grave
فؤادي والهوى قدح وخمر
My heart and passion are a goblet and wine,
قالوا ألا تصف الغرام لنا
They said, "Will you not describe love to us
ترفق فإن الرفق زين وقلما
Be gentle, for gentleness is beautiful, and rarely
لا تعاشر ما عشت أحمق واعلم
Do not befriend a fool, for as long as you live,
عباس يا خير الملوك عدالة
Abbas, O best of kings in justice
هنيئا لريا ما تضم الجوانح
Welcome to Rayya, whose bosom contains delight!
تغرب إذا أتربت والتمس الغنى
Wander afar when your home devastates you, and seek what enriches.
إذا سدت في معشر فاتبع
When you sit in a group, follow
بادر الفرصة واحذر فوتها
Seize the opportunity and beware missing it
يا من رأى الشادن في سربه
O you who saw the gazelle wandering
صبرت وما بالصبر عار على الفتى
I bore with patience, for patience brings no shame
إذا افتقر المرء استهان بفضله
When a man becomes impoverished, his virtues are belittled.
خل العتاب فلو طلبت مهذباً
Let go of reproach, for if you sought a refined man
وصاحب رعيت دهرا وده
A friend I grazed for years, loving him
ليس الصديق الذي تعلو مناسبه
A friend is not one whose association is high
دار الصديق ولا تأمن بوادره
Beware of the house of friends, and do not feel safe from their harm,
هتف الديك سحرة
The rooster crowed at dawn
لهوى الكواعب ذمة لا تخفر
For the passion of beautiful women there is a pact unbroken,
أيها المغرور مهلا
O deluded one, wait!
محا البين ما أبقت عيون المها مني
The separation erased what eyes of tenderness had left of me,
وا لوعة القلب من غزلان أخبية
Oh, the heart's agony from the gazelles of hidden vales
ما الدهر إلا ضوء شمس
Time is but the light of a sun risen high,
عرف الهوى في نظرتي فنهاني
Love saw the look in my eyes, so it warned me away,
بك استقامت مصر حتى غدت
With you Egypt was set aright, until
يا نديمي في سرنديب كفا
O my friend in Serendib, cease thy blame!
ومنادم غرد الحديث كأنما
With a conversant whose talk is like the melody of a lute,
طهر لسانك ما استطعت
Purify your tongue as much as you can, and do not be
حياتي في الهوى تلف
My life is ruined by passion
هو ما قلت فاحذرنها صباحا
It's what I said, so beware of it in the morning
تحبب إلى الإخوان بالحلم تغتنم
Befriend the brothers with forbearance, seize
ليس لي غير خالك الحجر الأسود
I have nothing but your cheek's black stone
قالت وقد سمعت شعري فأعجبها
She spoke, and hearing my verse did please her so
ألا بأبي من حسنه وحديثه
By the one whose beauty and conversation
يا قرير العين بالوسن
O gentle-eyed one with languid grace
أراك الحمى شوقي إليك شديد
I see your passion for me is intense,
ألا إن أخلاق الرجال وإن نمت
Behold! A man's morals, though they thrive,
خليلي ما في الدهر أطول حسرة
My friend, nothing in life is longer than regret
وذي وجهين تلقاه طليقاً
Two-faced, he appears cheerful
صبوت إلى المدامة والغواني
I inclined towards wine and songstresses,
أبابل رأي العين أم هذه مصر
Is this Babylon that dazzles my eyes, or is it Egypt?
ألا حي بالمقياس ريا المعالم
O joyful place measured by destiny, greetings to you, O landmark,
كتمت الهوى خوف إفشائه
I concealed my love fearing its disclosure
وذي جبروت لا يرى غير نفسه
With autocracy, seeing none but himself
ألا يا حمام الأيك إلفك حاضر
O dove of the valley, your company is present
إن شئت أن تحوي المعالي فادرع
If you wish to attain the heights, then arm yourself with patience,
اكتم ضميرك من عدوك جاهدا
Conceal your inner thoughts from your foe though with toil unceasing
خفض عليك ولا تجزع لنائبة
Lower your wing over the grief that arises
لعمري لقد أيقظت من كان راقدا
By my life! I have awakened those who were asleep
أعزيك لا أني أظنك جازعا
I console you, not because I think you are grieving
ألا لا تلم صباً على طول سقمه
Blame not a lover if love makes him pine,
ألائمتي كفي الملام عن الذي
My critic, cease your blame of one
أي قلب على صدودك يبقى
What heart remains steadfast 'gainst your coldness,
جد بالنوال فرزق الله متصل
Strive with diligence, for God's bounty is unceasing.
رميت فلم أصب ورمت فأصمت
I shot but missed, she shot and hit
يا ناصر الحق على الباطل
O champion of truth against falsehood
هل من فتى ينشد قلبي معي
Is there a lad who sings with me
عودي بوصل أو خذي ما بقي
Return to me with union, or take what remains of me
وصاحب لا كان من صاحب
A friend who was no true friend
رأيت بصحراء القرافة نسوة
I saw in the desert of Al-Qarafa women
تحمل إلى نادي الحبيب رسالة
Deliver to my beloved's abode a message
وروعاء المسامع ما تمطت
The gazelle whose hearing delighted,
لو كان يدري الفتى مكنون ما خبأت
If only the youth knew what fate has hidden for him
لك الحمد إن الخير منك وإنني
You deserve all praise, for all good comes from You,
وليلة أنس قصر اللهو طولها
A night of intimacy which Allah shortened despite its length
كل حي سيموت
Every living being will die
يدل على أن ليس في الدهر رحمة
Their treachery reveals this age has no mercy,
أمريم لا والله أنساك بعدما
Amiraymu, by God I have not forgotten you
غاد الندى بالجيزة الفيحاء
The dew descended in the spacious valley,
لأمر ما تحيرت العقول
For something unknowable, minds are perplexed,
أصافي خليلي ما صفا لي فإن جفا
My intimate friend did not treat me with kindness, so if he was cold
أملت رجائي في غد فانتظرته
I placed my hopes in tomorrow, so I awaited it
منحتك ألقاب العلا فادعني باسمي
You granted me titles of nobility, so call me by my name,
من طلب العز بلا آلة
Whoever seeks might without means
يا ذكرة أبصرت
O memories, in whose mirror
كتمت هواك حتى ليس يدري
I concealed my love for you, none could tell
إذا أتاك خليل بعد مندمة
When a friend comes to you after a fault
فزعت إلى الدموع فلم تجبني
I sought out tears, but they did not respond,
نزعت عن الصبا وعصيت نفسي
I cast off youth and disobeyed my soul
مضى حسن في حلبة الشعر سابقاً
Hasan excelled in the arena of poetry as a pioneer,
أغرة تحت طره
A blush beneath her veil -
ألا بأبي من كان نورا مجسدا
Oh my father, whose light embodied
يا رائد البرق يمم دارة العلم
O guide of the lightning, steer your course towards the banner of glory,
ويلاه من نار الهوى
Alas for the fire of passion!
قليل من يدوم على الوداد
Few are those who keep affection long
وذي حدب يلتج بالسفن كلما
With undulating ridges it surges with ships
سل مالك الملك فهو الآمر الناهي
Ask the King who owns all, for He is the one who commands and forbids
ولما تداعى القوم واشتبك القنا
When the people came together and the spears intertwined,
ليس ابن آدم ذا جهل بمصرعه
The son of Adam is not ignorant of his demise
أترى الحمام ينوح من طرب معي
Do you see the dove moaning in ecstasy with me,
يا راحلاً غاب صبري بعد فرقته
O you who departed, my patience faded after your leave
رف الندى وتنفس النوار
The dew gently wafted, and the breeze softly blew,
إذا المرء لم يرم الهناة بمثلها
When a man does not repel injury with its like
إن قلبي وهو الأبي دهته
My heart, though stout, is torn with separation's blade,
لا فارس اليوم يحمي السرح بالوادي
No knight today defends the plain,
غلب الوجد عليه فبكى
Passion overcame him, so he wept
وباكية شجت قلبي بلحن
With a lament that pierced my heart with its melody
صبح مطير ونسمة عطره
A morning fresh, and breezes sweet perfumed,
ديني الحنيف وربي الله
My religion is Hanif and my Lord is Allah
ألا هتفت بالأيك ساجعة القمر
Alas! The moon called out to her beloved in agony
وما مصر عمر الدهر إلا غنيمة
Egypt's lifespan is but spoils
أشدت بذكري بادئاً ومعقباً
You started by mentioning me, and kept at it,
أدرها قبل تغريد الحمامه
Drink before the cooing of the dove

Poetry is the glory of man, unless it be
قد عاقني الشك في أمر أضعت له
Doubt has estranged me regarding an affair I had resolved
يعزى الفتى في كل رزء وليته
The youth is consoled for every mishap, would that he
توازن الصيف والشتاء
Summer and winter balanced out,
إن ابن آدم ذو طبائع أربع
The son of Adam has four natures
يا بانة من لي بضمك
O beauty, who can I hold close?
دع حبيب القلب يا سقم
Leave off, O sickness, him who is the heart's beloved!
أبيت الرد للسؤال علما
هجرت ظلوم وهجرها صلة الأسى
أعد يا دهر أيام الشباب
ذهب الهوى بمخيلتي وشبابي
سعيت فأدركت المنى غير أنني
ماذا على قرة العينين لو صفحت
أديرا كؤوس الراح قد لمع الفجر
ونبأة أطلقت عيني من سنة
ولما استقل الحي في رونق الضحى
طربت ولولا الحلم أدركني الجهل
سما الملك مختالا بما أنت فاعل
ألا حي من أسماء رسم المنازل
بقوة العلم تقوى شوكة الأمم
هوى كان لي أن ألبس المجد معلما
ذنبي إليك غرامي
أخذ الكرى بمعاقد الأجفان
نعاء عليه أيها الثقلان
إن لي صاحباً ولا بد منه
كن كما شئت من رشاد وغي
أقلا ملامي في هوى الشادن الأحوى
وصاحب كهموم النفس معترض
من صاحب العجز لم يظفر بما طلبا
أفتانة العينين كفي عن القلب
ألا يا لقومي من غزال مربب
بلوت سرائر الإخوان حتى
ألا قل لقوم شامتين تربصوا
املإ القدح
سارية خفاقة الجناح
أبني الكنانة أبشروا بمحمد
رضيت من الدنيا بما لا أوده
تمهل ولا تعجل إذا رمت حاجة
كرم الطبع شيمة الأمجاد
أيد المنونقدحت أي زناد
هل لسلام العليل رد
أنسيم سرى بنفحة رند
إذا أنت أبغضت امرأ فاخش ضره
هل في التصابي على امرئ فند
جاوزت في اللوم حد القصد فاتئد
وشامخ في ذرى شماء باذخة
يا أيها الظالم في ملكه
تغنى الحمام ونم الشذا
لا شيء في الدهر يغني عن أخي ثقة
يقول أناس والعجائب جمة
بكيت عليا إذ مضى لسبيله
أيا ملكا همت كفاه جودا
شفني وجدي وأبلاني السهر
نم الصبا وانتبه الطائر
يا أيها السرف المدل بنفسه
فعلت خيرا بقوم
من خالف الحزم خانته معاذره
هيهات ليس لحافظ من مشبه
من لقلبي بشادن
فؤاد بأقمار الأكلة مولع
إن النصيحة لا تحض
متى يشتفي هذا الفؤاد المفجع
لوى جيده وانصرف
