1. The life flourished and the streams gushed
And the springs overflowed and the ponds filled
١. عَمَّ الْحَيَا وَاسْتَنَّتِ الْجَدَاوِلُ
وَفَاضَتِ الْغُدْرَانُ وَالْمَنَاهِلُ
2. Adorned with its light are the beautiful maidens
And the bulbuls chirped in their bowers
٢. وَازَّيَّنَتْ بِنَوْرِهَا الْخَمَائِلُ
وَغَرَّدَتْ فِي أَيْكِهَا الْبَلابِلُ
3. Goodness has spread over the land
And the face of earth is verdant
٣. وَشَمِلَ الْبِقَاعَ خَيْرٌ شَامِلُ
فَصَفْحَةُ الأَرْضِ نَبَاتٌ خَائِلُ
4. And the sky's brow is laden with clouds
Between the two blows a separating wind
٤. وَجَبْهَةُ الْجَوِّ غَمَامٌ حَافِلُ
وَبَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ نَسِيمٌ حَائِلُ
5. With it the dawns and the evenings dew
As if the vegetation is a vast ocean
٥. تَنْدَى بِهِ الأَسْحَارُ وَالأَصَائِلُ
كَأَنَّمَا النَّبَاتُ بَحْرٌ هَائِلُ
6. And the hills are nothing but its coast
And the lofty palms are sailing ships
٦. وَلَيْسَ إِلَّا الأَكَمَاتِ سَاحِلُ
وَشَامِخُ الدَّوْحِ سَفِينٌ جَافِلُ
7. Inclining now this way, now that way
Swayed by the south winds and the breezes
٧. مُعْتَدِلٌ طَوْراً وَطَوْرَاً مَائِلُ
تَهْفُو بِهِ الْجَنُوبُ وَالشَّمَائِلُ
8. And the tall and mighty trees
Famous for their long and trailing branches
٨. وَالْبَاسِقَاتُ الشُّمَّخُ الْحَوَامِلُ
مَشْمُورَةٌ عَنْ سُوقِهَا الذَّلاذِلُ
9. Winding at their stems and flexuous
Clustered at their heads are the tresses
٩. مَلْوِيَّةٌ فِي جِيدِهَا الْعَثَاكِلُ
مَعْقُودَةٌ فِي رَأْسِهَا الْفَلائِلُ
10. Among them the ripe dates have stalks and clusters
Red as if they were fingers
١٠. لِلْبُسْرِ فِيهَا قَانِئٌ وَنَاصِلُ
مُخَضَّبٌ كَأَنَّهُ الأَنَامِلُ
11. As though of gold pieces were the pendants
With silver chains binding them
١١. كَأَنَّهُ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ قَنَادِلُ
مِنَ الْعَرَاجِينِ لَهَا سَلاسِلُ
12. Among them are fruits in dense clusters
You'd imagine them sad, questioning
١٢. لِلْمَنْجَنُونِ بَيْنَهَا أَزَامِلُ
تَخَالُهَا مَحْزُونَةً تُسَائِلُ
13. With flowing tears welling from within
As if a mother bereft of children
١٣. لَهَا دُمُوعٌ ذُرَّفٌ هَوَامِلُ
كَأَنَّهَا أُمُّ بَنِينَ ثَاكِلُ
14. In their plaits, of their braids are coils
For them are anklets of golden bells
١٤. فِي جِيدِهَا مِنْ ضَفْرِهَا حَبَائِلُ
مِنَ الْقَوَادِيسِ لَهَا جَلاجِلُ
15. Revolving like meteors, fixed are their stations
Some ascending, others falling and others low
١٥. تَدُورُ كَالشُّهْبِ لَهَا مَنَازِلُ
فَصَاعِدٌ وَدَافِقٌ وَنَازِلُ
16. And the water amid the meadows is flowing
Sheltered by its banks, the ripplets
١٦. وَالْمَاءُ مَا بَيْنَ الْغِيَاضِ سَائِلُ
تَحْنُو عَلى شُطَانِهِ الْغَيَاطِلُ
17. As if pregnant she-camels kneeling down to rest
And the birds in its branches warbling
١٧. كَأَنَّهَا حَوَائِمٌ نَوَاهِلُ
وَالطَّيْرُ فِي أَفْنَانِهَا هَوَادِلُ
18. At dawn and eve making them brilliant
So rise to attain your wishes, O oblivious one
١٨. تَزْهُو بِهَا الأَسْحَارُ وَالأَصَائِلُ
فَانْهَضْ إِلَى نَيْلِ الْمُنَى يَا غَافِلُ
19. For the days of youth are few
Man in this world is a vanishing mirage
١٩. وَانْعَمْ فَأَيَّامُ الصِّبَا قَلائِلُ
وَالْمَرْءُ فِي الدُّنْيَا خَيَالٌ زَائِلُ
20. And time for man is ever consuming
And all things in time are unreal
٢٠. وَالدَّهْرُ لِلإِنْسَانِ يَوْمَاً آكِلُ
وَكُلُّ شَيءٍ فِي الزَّمَانِ بَاطِلُ
