1. Alas! Who will help me against a friend
Whose companionship has made me drink bitterness?

2. He does his friend wrong and hurts his companion.
He is peevish if he is reproached and told to regret.

3. He blames without cause and gets angry without reason.
If I say “Gently!”, he twists his mouth.

4. If I do not respond to his words, he sulks.
He has follies that kill contentment

5. And foolishness that almost sheds blood.
He obstinately persists in falsehood when confuted

6. And does not abandon suspicion or refrain from sin.
So I find no comfort in him,

7. Nor do I find any joyous companion in him.
My happiness has changed because of him into gloom

8. And my day into darkness because of him
May God not have mercy on the day

9. When he came to me bringing bad luck!
