يا صارم اللحظ من أغراك بالمهج

1. O you with the piercing glance, who deceived you with tenderness
That you should oppress it unjustly without qualm?

١. يا صارِمَ اللَّحْظِ مَنْ أَغْرَاكَ بِالْمُهَجِ
حَتَّى فَتَكْتَ بِهَا ظُلْماً بِلا حَرَجِ

2. My soul kept deluding me while it was heedless,
Until the darkness took hold of the heart's kernel.

٢. ما زالَ يَخْدَعُ نَفْسِي وَهْيَ لاهِيَةٌ
حَتَّى أَصَابَ سَوادَ الْقَلْبِ بِالدَّعَجِ

3. A glance, if gazelles were like his glance
On the day of trial, would leave no pasture untouched.

٣. طَرْفٌ لَو أَنَّ الظُّبَا كَانَتْ كَلَحْظَتِهِ
يَومَ الْكَرِيهَةِ مَا أَبْقَتْ عَلَى وَدَجِ

4. He hinted to my heart and so it yielded to him,
Willingly, and left me perplexed, with no fuss.

٤. أَوْحَى إِلَى القَلْبِ فانْقَادَتْ أَزِمَّتُهُ
طَوْعاً إِلَيْهِ وَخلَّانِي وَلَمْ يَعُجِ

5. So how can I make it up with him when the ropes
Of that slender-waisted one have got entwined?

٥. فَكَيْفَ لِي بِتَلافِيهِ وَقَدْ عَلِقَتْ
بِهِ حَبائِلُ ذاكَ الشَّادِنِ الْغَنِجِ

6. The fire of his suffering would have melted my heart
Had I not been pouring my tears freely in streams.

٦. كَادَتْ تُذِيبُ فُؤادِي نارُ لَوْعَتِهِ
لَوْ لَمْ أَكُنْ مِنْ مَسِيلِ الدَّمْعِ في لُجَجِ

7. Were it not for the beauties of Kazima's twisting strands,
Passion would have had no power over hearts.

٧. لَوْلا الْفَواتِنُ مِنْ غِزْلانِ كَاظِمَةٍ
مَا كانَ لِلْحُبِّ سُلْطَانٌ عَلَى المُهَجِ

8. Is there any hope of union with a fair one
Who could heal the sickness in a heart parted?

٨. فَهَلْ إِلَى صِلَةٍ مِنْ غَادِرٍ عِدَةٌ
تَشْفِي تَبارِيحَ قَلْبٍ بِالْفِراقِ شَجِ

9. I spent the night tending the stars in the darkness
While each late night wanderer feared going astray.

٩. أَبِيتُ أَرْعَى نُجُومَ اللَّيْلِ في ظُلَمٍ
يَخْشى الضَّلالَةَ فيها كُلُّ مُدَّلِجِ

10. It was as if its stars and the atmosphere were clouded
With mysteries peering out through openings.

١٠. كَأَنَّ أَنْجُمَهُ والجَوُّ مُعتَكِرٌ
غِيدٌ بِأَخْبِيَةٍ يَنْظُرْنَ مِنْ فُرَجِ

11. A night whose obscurities bewildered, whose stars
Frustrated, and whose hours were protracted like arguments.

١١. لَيْلٌ غَيَاهِبُهُ حَيْرَى وأَنْجُمُهُ
حَسْرَى وَساعاتُهُ فِي الطُّولِ كالْحِجَجِ

12. It was as if morning feared the night when it saw
Its darkness with impasses so did not emerge.

١٢. كَأَنَّما الصُّبْحُ خافَ اللَّيْلَ حِينَ رَأَى
ظَلْمَاءَهُ ذاتَ أَسْدادٍ فَلَمْ يَلِجِ

13. Would that the one who blamed me, his glare abated
And he refrained from foolish talk coarse and rude!

١٣. فَلَيْتَ مَنْ لامَنِي لانَتْ شَكِيمَتُهُ
فَكَفَّ عَنِّي فُضُولَ الْمَنطِقِ السَّمِجِ

14. He reckons me crazy, that I'm frivolous,
And can barely see the flaw that is in it.

١٤. يَظُنُّ بِي سَفَهاً أَنِّي عَلَى سَرَفٍ
وَلا يَكَادُ يَرَى ما فِيهِ مِنْ عِوَجِ

15. Spare me from blame if you're a prudent man,
For blame in love is accounted a transgression.

١٥. فاعْدِلْ عَنِ اللَّوْمِ إِنْ كُنْتَ امْرَأً فَطِنَاً
فَاللَّوْمُ في الْحُبِّ مَعْدُودٌ مِنَ الْهَوَجِ

16. Never can the blame of critics reach
A heart commingled with the love of Allah's Emissary!

١٦. هَيْهَاتَ يَسْلُكُ لَوْمُ الْعَاذِلِينَ إِلَى
قَلْبٍ بِحُبِّ رسُولِ اللهِ مُمْتَزِجِ

17. He is the Prophet but for whose guidance
I would be the most ignorant man on earth.

١٧. هُوَ النَّبِيُّ الَّذي لَوْلا هِدَايَتُهُ
لَكانَ أَعْلَمُ مَنْ فِي الأَرْضِ كَالْهَمَجِ

18. I am the one who, from desire for his meadow,
Yearns more ardently than a moaning sandgrouse.

١٨. أَنَا الَّذي بِتُّ مِنْ وَجْدِي بِرَوْضَتِهِ
أَحِنُّ َشْوقاً كَطَيْرِ الْبَانَةِ الْهَزِجِ

19. My soul was aroused by his mention and gained new life,
And which rapt youth is not aroused by recalling yearning?

١٩. هَاجَتْ بِذِكْرَاهُ نَفْسِي فَاكْتَسَتْ وَلَهاً
وَأَيُّ صَبٍّ بِذِكْرِ الشَّوْقِ لَمْ يَهِجِ

20. What tricks when my soul lacks patience
With separation and my cares lack solutions?

٢٠. فَمَا احْتِيَالِي وَنَفْسِي غَيْرُ صَابِرَةٍ
عَلَى البُعَادِ وَهَمِّي غَيْرُ مُنْفَرِجِ

21. I cannot manage relief if I desire it
Or overcome what my soul has of needs.

٢١. لا أَسْتَطِيعُ بَرَاحاً إِنْ هَمَمْتُ وَلا
أَقْوَى عَلَى دَفْعِ مَا بِالنَّفْسِ مِنْ حِوَجِ

22. If a man had power over his movements
He would go nowhere but to his place of joy.

٢٢. لَوْ كانَ لِلْمَرْءِ حُكْمٌ فِي تَنَقُّلِهِ
مَا كانَ إِلَّا إِلَى مَغْنَاهُ مُنْعَرَجِي

23. So is there a way to hoped for unions
Or a relief from the straits of sorrows?

٢٣. فَهَلْ إِلَى صِلَةِ الآمَالِ مِنْ سَبَبٍ
أَمْ هَلْ إِلَى ضِيقَةِ الأَحْزَانِ مِنْ فَرَجِ

24. O Lord, by the Chosen One, grant me, though
My sins be great, a mercy without need for proof,

٢٤. يَا رَبِّ بِالْمُصْطَفَى هَبْ لِي وَإِنْ عَظُمَتْ
جَرائِمِي رَحْمَةً تُغْنِي عَنِ الْحُجَجِ

25. And do not abandon me to my soul, for my hands
Are tied and my dawn is not shining clear.

٢٥. وَلا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي فَإِنَّ يَدِي
مَغْلُولَةٌ وَصَباحِي غَيْرُ مُنْبَلِجِ

26. I have none but You, and You are the Helper when
The throngs press close on the day of crowded horror.

٢٦. مَا لِي سِواكَ وَأَنْتَ الْمُسْتَعانُ إِذَا
ضَاقَ الزِّحَامُ غَدَاةَ المَوقِفِ الْحَرِجِ

27. I have no hope left but in You, so do not
Cut off my hopes, for I fear my own distress.

٢٧. لَمْ يَبْقَ لِي أَمَلٌ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ فَلا
تَقْطَعْ رَجَائِي فَقَدْ أَشْفَقْتُ مِنْ حَرَجِي
