1. Every teardrop from my eyes deserves
How could a grieving heart restrain its tears?
١. لِكُلِّ دَمْعٍ مِنْ مُقْلَةٍ سَبَبُ
وَكَيْفَ يَمْلِكُ دَمْعَ الْعَيْنِ مُكْتَئِبُ
2. Had I not longed, no eyes would've wept
Nor hearts in darkness lain sleepless, drear
٢. لَوْلا مُكَابَدَةُ الأَشْوَاقِ ما دَمَعَتْ
عَيْنٌ وَلا بَاتَ قَلْبٌ فِي الْحَشَا يَجِبُ
3. O you who blame, don't hasten accusations
For love reigns supreme, it shall conquer all
٣. فَيَا أَخَا الْعَذْلِ لا تَعْجَلْ بِلائِمَةٍ
عَلَيَّ فَالْحُبُّ سُلْطَانٌ لَهُ الغَلَبُ
4. Had one the wisdom to withstand doubts
Suspicion's darkness would not him enthrall
٤. لَوْ كَانَ لِلْمَرْءِ عَقْلٌ يَسْتَضيءُ بِهِ
فِي ظُلْمَةِ الشَّكِّ لَم تَعْلَقْ بِهِ النُّوَبُ
5. If future's veiled truths were laid bare
One would know what comes and evade harm
٥. وَلَوْ تَبَيَّنَ ما في الْغَيْبِ مِنْ حَدَثٍ
لَكَانَ يَعْلَمُ مَا يَأْتِي وَيَجْتَنِبُ
6. Yet he's the era's prey, stricken aimless
By arrows that have no feathers or barbs
٦. لَكِنَّهُ غَرَضٌ لِلدَّهْرِ يَرْشُقُهُ
بِأَسْهُمٍ ما لَها رِيشٌ وَلا عَقَبُ
7. How can I hide my longing when it's a burden
That rends my soul, no respite can I find?
٧. فَكَيفَ أَكْتُمُ أَشْوَاقِي وَبِي كَلَفٌ
تَكَادُ مِنْ مَسِّهِ الأَحْشَاءُ تَنْشَعِبُ
8. Or keep silent when a heart aflame
Flashes at the horizon like lightning strike
٨. أَمْ كَيْفَ أَسْلُو وَلِي قَلْبٌ إِذَا الْتَهَبَتْ
بِالأُفْقِ لَمْعَةُ بَرْقٍ كَادَ يَلْتَهِبُ
9. In love I'm wrapped in burns, the slightest
Nearly takes my soul, so severe is my plight
٩. أَصْبَحْتُ فِي الْحُبِّ مَطْوِيَّاً عَلَى حُرَقٍ
يَكَادُ أَيْسَرُها بِالرُّوحِ يَنْتَشِبُ
10. My sighs are fiery sparks, my breath
Like embers emitting flame, my chest so tight
١٠. إِذَا تَنَفَّسْتُ فَاضَتْ زَفْرَتِي شَرَراً
كَمَا اسْتَنَارَ وَرَاءَ الْقَدْحَةِ اللَّهَبُ

I've nothing left but my soul to give
١١. لَمْ يَبْقَ لِي غَيْرَ نَفْسِي مَا أَجُودُ بِهِ
وَقَدْ فَعَلْتُ فَهَلْ مِنْ رَحْمَةٍ تَجِبُ
12. And I have given it, is there mercy in sight?
When passion stirs my heart, it flutters
١٢. كَأَنَّ قَلْبِي إِذَا هَاجَ الْغَرَامُ بِهِ
بَيْنَ الْحَشَا طَائِرٌ فِي الْفَخِّ يَضْطَرِبُ
13. A bird trapped, trembling in the snare of love
It won't release my heart from its throes
١٣. لا يَتْرُكُ الْحُبُّ قَلْبِي مِنْ لَواعِجِهِ
كَأَنَّمَا بَيْنَ قَلْبِي وَالْهَوَى نَسَبُ
14. As if my heart and love are intertwined
So blame me not for tears that streamed
١٤. فَلا تَلُمْنِي عَلَى دَمْعٍ تَحَدَّرَ في
سَفْحِ الْعَقِيقِ فَلِي في سَفْحِهِ أَرَبُ
15. Down cheeks of ruby, for in them I have a right
Dwellings - when their image stirs my thoughts
١٥. مَنَازِلٌ كُلَّمَا لاحَتْ مَخَايِلُهَا
فِي صَفْحَةِ الْفِكْرِ مِنِّي هاجَنِي طَرَبُ
16. I'm roused, so unsettled is my mind
At their dweller's home we had a pact
١٦. لِي عِنْدَ سَاكِنِهَا عَهْدٌ شَقِيتُ بِهِ
وَالْعَهْدُ ما لَم يَصُنْهُ الْوُدُّ مُنْقَضِبُ
17. When faith is not kept, bonds are resigned
My thoughts of them have fallen ill after health
١٧. وَعادَ ظَنِّي عَلِيلاً بَعْدَ صِحَّتِهِ
وَالظَنُّ يَبْعُدُ أَحْيَاناً وَيَقْتَرِبُ
18. Thoughts oft wander far, at times come nigh
O noble lords, why has your aid narrowed?
١٨. فَيَا سَرَاةَ الْحِمَى ما بَالُ نُصْرَتِكُمْ
ضَاقَتْ عَلَيَّ وَأَنْتُمْ سادَةٌ نُجُبُ
19. You great leaders, you noble and high
You've let me down, though in you I had faith
١٩. أَضَعْتُمُوني وَكانَتْ لِي بِكُمْ ثِقَةٌ
مَتَى خَفَرْتُمْ ذِمَامَ الْعَهْدِ يا عَرَبُ
20. When did you break troth's reins, O Arabs?
Should not the exile under your protection
٢٠. أَلَيْسَ فِي الحَقِّ أَنْ يَلْقَى النَّزِيلُ بِكُمْ
إِمْناً إِذا خَافَ أَنْ يَنْتَابَهُ الْعَطَبُ
21. Find refuge if danger looms or mishaps?
How can you rob my heart without fault
٢١. فَكَيْفَ تَسْلُبُنِي قَلْبِي بِلا تِرَةٍ
فَتاةُ خِدْرٍ لَهَا فِي الْحَيِّ مُنْتَسَبُ
22. A maiden of satin, of noble descent?
She passed us by, walking with her friends
٢٢. مَرَّتْ عَلَيْنَا تَهَادَى في صَوَاحِبِهَا
كَالْبَدْرِ في هَالَةٍ حَفَّتْ بِهِ الشُّهُبُ
23. Like the moon in its halo, stars her ornament
Her luxuriant branches sway with charm
٢٣. تَهْتَزُّ مِنْ فَرْعِها الْفَيْنَانِ في سرَقٍ
كَسَمْهَرِيٍّ لهُ مِنْ سَوْسَنٍ عَذَبُ
24. As a bay tree with lilies sweet and bent
Her unveiled face beneath her cloak
٢٤. كَأَنَّ غُرَّتَهَا مِنْ تَحْتِ طُرَّتِها
فَجْرٌ بِجَانِحَةِ الظَّلْمَاءِ مُنْتَقِبُ
25. Dawn's flank veiled in the dark night's tent
She was a verse of beauty then hid from us
٢٥. كانَتْ لَنا آيَةً في الْحُسْنِ فاحْتَجَبَتْ
عَنَّا بِلَيْلِ النَّوَى وَالْبَدْرُ يَحْتَجِبُ
26. By the night of distance, the moon hid from sight
Is there no glance to revive the soul
٢٦. فَهَلْ إِلى نَظْرَةٍ يَحْيَا بِهَا رَمَقٌ
ذَرِيعَةٌ تَبْتَغِيها النَّفْسُ أَو سَبَبُ
27. A pretext the soul seeks, or cause or plight?
I spend my nights in loneliness, neither sated
٢٧. أَبِيتُ في غُرْبَةٍ لا النَّفْسُ رَاضِيَةٌ
بِها وَلا المُلْتَقَى مِنْ شِيعَتِي كَثَبُ
28. Is my soul, nor are comrades in multitudes at hand
No friend whose company delights the soul
٢٨. فَلا رَفِيقٌ تَسُرُّ النَّفْسَ طَلْعَتُهُ
وَلا صَدِيقٌ يَرَى ما بِي فَيَكْتَئِبُ
29. No confidant who sees my state and understands
Amongst the strange turns of my fate
٢٩. وَمِنْ عَجَائِبِ ما لاقَيْتُ مِنْ زَمَنِي
أَنِّي مُنِيتُ بِخَطْبٍ أَمْرُهُ عَجَبُ
30. Is that I'm tried for a deed so oddly grand
No crime have I committed to deserve
٣٠. لَم أَقْتَرِفْ زَلَّةً تَقْضِي عَلَيَّ بِما
أَصْبَحْتُ فيهِ فَماذَا الْوَيْلُ والْحَرَبُ
31. The plight that I wake to, so where's the blame?
Is my defense of my faith and my homeland
٣١. فَهَلْ دِفَاعِي عَنْ دِيني وَعَنْ وَطَنِي
ذَنْبٌ أُدَانُ بِهِ ظُلْمَاً وَأَغْتَرِبُ
32. A sin I'm convicted for, that I'm exiled?
Let not the envious think I have regrets
٣٢. فَلا يَظُنّ بِيَ الْحُسَّادُ مَنْدَمَةً
فَإِنَّنِي صابِرٌ فِي اللهِ مُحْتَسِبُ
33. I'm patient in God, my reward He'll provide
I've gained glory, I care not what vicissitudes
٣٣. أَثْرَيْتُ مَجْداً فَلَمْ أَعْبَأْ بِمَا سَلَبَتْ
أَيْدِي الْحَوادِثِ مِنِّي فَهْوَ مُكْتَسَبُ
34. Have seized from me, for it was my gain
Adversity doesn't lower the prideful soul
٣٤. لا يَخْفِضُ الْبُؤْسُ نَفْساً وَهْيَ عَالِيَةٌ
وَلا يُشِيدُ بِذِكْرِ الْخَامِلِ النَّشَبُ
35. Nor are the ignoble by fame raised high
I'm a man not deterred by fears from my resolve
٣٥. إِنِّي امْرُؤٌ لا يَرُدُّ الخَوْفُ بادِرَتِي
وَلا يَحِيفُ عَلَى أَخْلاقِيَ الْغَضَبُ
36. Nor does anger make me unjust and deprived
I've controlled my forbearance and spoken no fault
٣٦. مَلَكْتُ حِلْمِي فَلَمْ أَنْطِقْ بِمُنْدِيَةٍ
وَصُنْتُ عِرْضِي فَلَم تَعْلَقْ بِهِ الرِّيَبُ
37. Kept my honor unsullied, from doubts free
What care I if my soul is free of guilt
٣٧. ومَا أُبَالِي ونَفْسِي غَيْرُ خاطِئَةٍ
إِذا تَخَرَّصَ أَقْوامٌ وَإِنْ كَذَبُوا
38. As some scheme against me, even if they lie
See, it's a deceitful plot stained Joseph's cloak
٣٨. ها إِنَّها فِرْيَةٌ قَدْ كانَ باءَ بِها
في ثَوْبِ يُوسُفَ مِنْ قَبْلِي دَمٌ كَذِبُ
39. With blood falsely, before it stained mine
If my fate has darkened and abandoned me
٣٩. فَإِنْ يَكُنْ سَاءَنِي دَهْرِي وغَادَرَنِي
في غُرْبَةٍ لَيْسَ لِي فيها أَخٌ حَدِبُ
40. In strangeness, bereft of kin or loved ones near
The dark nights will yet clear after gloom
٤٠. فَسَوْفَ تَصْفُو اللَّيَالي بَعْدَ كُدْرَتِها
وَكُلُّ دَوْرٍ إِذَا ما تَمَّ يَنْقَلِبُ
