1. I console you, not because I think you are grieving
For some misfortune, but because it is my duty

2. And how could I console one who has gained from time
Knowledge of the wonders that destiny brings

3. So my friend, have patience, for you will find
None but the present to mourn the departed

4. Show forbearance, for patience is the noblest friend
To one whose companion has left for the noblest abode

5. Do not despair if misfortunes befall you
For mankind are prone to reverses of fortune

6. Since Adam's offspring in ages before us
Have gone the way of all flesh and turned to dust

7. If you have lost a refined and noble soul
All sons of woman are subject to life's calamities

8. Those who survive you still hail him by name
And tell of his virtues and excellent qualities
