أين ليالينا بوادي الغضى

1. Where are our nights in the valley of passion?
Those were times I wish had not passed.

١. أَيْنَ لَيَالِينَا بِوَادي الْغَضَى
ذَلِكَ عَهْدٌ لَيْتَهُ مَا انْقَضَى

2. With them, I was content with my life,
Until when they were gone, I lost all contentment.

٢. كُنْتُ بِهِ مِنْ عِيشَتِي رَاضِياً
حَتَّى إِذَا وَلَّى عَدِمْتُ الرِّضَا

3. Days of play and youth, whenever
I remember them, space feels too confining.

٣. أَيَّامُ لَهْوٍ وَصِباً كُلَّمَا
ذَكَرْتُهَا ضَاقَ عَلَيَّ الْفَضَا

4. Oh, what a fate with its rulings!
It wronged us and decreed what it decreed.

٤. فَآهِ مِنْ دَهْرٍ بِأَحْكَامِهِ
جَارَ عَلَيْنَا وَقَضَى مَا قَضَى

5. What pleasure of youth was temporary,
What garment of bliss was stripped away!

٥. أَيَّ قِنَاعٍ مِنْ شَباَبٍ سَرَا
وَأَيَّ ثَوْبٍ مِنْ نَعِيمٍ نَضَا

6. It whitened the blackness of my hair -
If only it had blackened what it whitened!

٦. قَدْ بَيَّضَ الأَسْوَدَ مِنْ لِمَّتِي
يَا لَيْتَهُ سَوَّدَ ما بَيَّضَا

7. A time like a specter that visited, then when
Dawn shone from my graying, it departed.

٧. عَهْدٌ كَطَيْفٍ زَارَ حَتَّى إِذَا
أَشْرَقَ صُبْحٌ مِنْ مَشِيبي مَضَى

8. It was but a breeze that blew past,
A cloud that gathered and lightning that flashed.

٨. ما كَانَ إِلَّا كَنَسِيمٍ سَرَى
وَعَارضٍ غَامَ وَبَرْقٍ أَضَا

9. It passed and left behind only sorrow,
Among the sands like a sharpened sword.

٩. وَلَّى وَلَمْ يُعْقِبْ سِوَى حَسْرَةٍ
بَيْنَ الْحَشَا كَالصَّارِمِ الْمُنْتَضَى

10. Were it not for passion, the haunt of desire,
The embers of passion would not have kindled in my heart.

١٠. لَوْلا الْغَضَى وَهْوَ مَطافُ الْهَوَى
مَا شَبَّ فِي قَلْبِيَ جَمْرُ الْغَضَى

11. I commend to God that slender, delicate one
Who tortured me with aloofness, even hostility.

١١. أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ بِهِ شَادِنَاً
عَذَّبَنِي بِالصَّدِّ بَلْ أَرْمَضَا

12. Upright in stature with a glance
That taught the glance of the gazelle.

١٢. مُعْتَدِلُ الْقَامَةِ ذُو لَحْظَةٍ
تَعَلَّمَ الْخَطِّيُّ مِنْهُ الْمَضَا

13. A wild deer, since his sun set
From my sight in the distance, he has not blinked.

١٣. ظَبْيُ حِمىً مُذْ غَرَبَتْ شَمْسُهُ
عَنْ نَاظِرِي بِالْبَيْنِ مَا غَمَّضَا

14. I was gladdened when he came nearer,
And saddened when he left, turning away.

١٤. قَدْ سَرَّنِي حِينَ أَتَى مُقْبِلا
وَسَاءَنِي حِينَ مَضَى مُعْرِضَا

15. He burdened me with a torment, that if
Time itself took it on, it would buckle.

١٥. حَمَّلَنِي مِنْ وَجْدِهِ لَوْعَةً
لَوْ نَهَضَ الدَّهْرُ بِهَا خَفَّضَا

16. He has seized sleep and will not return it
And stolen my heart and will not compensate.

١٦. قَدْ أَخَذَ النَّوْمَ وَمَا رَدَّهُ
وَاسْتَلَبَ الْقَلْبَ وَمَا عَوَّضَا

17. Why did he delay in keeping his promise?
Should not a debt be repaid when due?

١٧. ما بَالُهُ مَاطَلَ فِي وَعْدِهِ
أَلَمْ يَحِنْ لِلدَّيْنِ أَنْ يُقْتَضَى

18. I took him to court before the king of love,
But he denied my rights and judged wrongly.

١٨. قَاضَيْتُهُ عِنْدَ مَلِيكِ الْهَوَى
فَغَلَّ حَقِّي وَأَسَاءَ الْقَضَا

19. So to whom can I complain when he has
Wronged me, and the wrong of wrong demands redress?

١٩. فَمَنْ لَهُ أَشْكُو وَقَدْ سَامَنِي
جَوْراً وَحَقُّ الْجَوْرِ أَنْ يُرْفَضَا

20. By God, were it not for fear of his abandonment,
My heart would not have spent the night troubled and provoked.

٢٠. تَاللَّهِ لَوْلا خَوْفُ هِجْرَانِهِ
مَا بَاتَ قَلْبِي عَانِياً مُحْرَضَا

21. Yet I have a will that gives me strength
And prevents me from being shaken in distress.

٢١. فَإِنَّ لِي مِنْ عَزْمَتِي صَاحِبَاً
يَمْنَعُنِي فِي الرَّوْعِ أَنْ أَدْحَضَا

22. And I am not one, if disaster should strike,
To let go the reins or resign them away.

٢٢. وَلَسْتُ مِمَّنْ إِنْ دَجَا حَادِثٌ
أَلْقَى زِمَامَ الأَمْرِ أَوْ فَوَّضَا

23. Rather I plunge into the fray undaunted
And cleave the adversary when he dares oppose.

٢٣. لَكِنَّنِي أَلْقَى الرَّدَى حَاسِرَاً
وَأَصْدَعُ الْخَصْمَ إِذَا عَرَّضَا

24. I sip the honey from those who befriend me
And spew poison at those who hate.

٢٤. أَسْتَحْقِبُ الشَّهْدَ لِمَنْ وَدَّنِي
وَأَنْفُثُ السُّمَّ لِمَنْ أَبْغَضَا

25. I have steeled myself in pursuit of greatness,
And a sword is not to be awed or blunted.

٢٥. جَرَّدْتُ نَفْسِي لِطِلابِ الْعُلا
وَالسَّيْفُ لا يُرْهَبُ أَوْ يُنْتَضَى

26. And I have words that come to my aid whenever
I call them in time of need, fully sufficient.

٢٦. وَلِي مِنَ الْقَوْلِ نَصِيرٌ إِذَا
دَعَوْتُهُ فِي حَاجَةٍ أَوْفَضَا

27. Ask glory about me, do not be shy,
For glory knows which sword is sharpened.

٢٧. سَلْ عَنِّيَ الْمَجْدَ وَلا تَحْتَشِمْ
فَالْمَجْدُ يَدْرِي أَيَّ سَيْفٍ نَضَا
