1. Blame not a lover if love makes him pine,
And leave him be, for he has no control.
١. أَلا لا تَلُمْ صبّاً عَلَى طُولِ سُقْمِهِ
وَدَعْهُ فَلَيْسَ الأَمْرُ فِيهِ لِحُكْمِهِ
2. Passion is not to be thwarted by guile,
It simply bends a man against his will.
٢. فَلَيْسَ الْهَوَى مِمَّا يُرَدُّ بِحِيلَةٍ
وَلَكِنَّهُ يَثْنِي الْفَتَى دُونَ عَزْمِهِ
3. One who willingly commits a sin,
Is not the same as one compelled therein.
٣. وَمَا يَسْتَوِي جَانٍ أَتَى الإِثْمَ طَائِعاً
وَآخَرُ لَمْ يَقْرفْهُ إِلَّا بِرَغْمِهِ
4. When a man finally admits to his wrong,
What use is his opponent's spiteful song?
٤. إِذَا مَا أَقَرَّ الْمَرْءُ يَوْمَاً بِذَنْبِهِ
فَمَاذَا الَّذِي تُغْنِي لَجَاجَةُ خَصْمِهِ
