وَعَهْدِي بِمَنْ جَادَتْ بِهِ لا تُخَاطِرُ

7. A quintet who know not what night is, nor has
modesty lifted from their faces the veils

٧. خُمَاسِيَّةٌ لَمْ تَدْرِ مَا اللَّيْلُ وَالسُّرَى
وَلَمْ تَنْحَسِرْ عَنْ صَفْحَتَيْهَا السَّتَائِرُ

8. Darling children clustered around their father
Like stars encircling the full moon in its glory

٨. عَقِيلَةُ أَتْرَابٍ تَوَالَيْنَ حَوْلَهَا
كَمَا دَارَ بِالْبَدْرِ النُّجُومُ الزَّواهِرُ

9. Heedless, unaware of the woes of life
Nor stirred by grave events however shocking

٩. غَوَافِلُ لا يَعْرِفْنَ بُؤْسَ مَعِيشَةٍ
وَلا هُنَّ بِالْخَطْبِ الْمُلِمِّ شَواعِرُ

10. Accustomed are they to humble living in the shade
Of a merciful father and home built by the elements

١٠. تَعَوَّدْنَ خَفْضَ الْعَيْشِ فِي ظِلِّ وَالِدٍ
رَحِيمٍ وَبَيْتٍ شَيَّدَتْهُ الْعَنَاصِرُ

11. Thus are they as a cluster of ripe grapes
Whose stars shone in the firmament, wandering

١١. فَهُنَّ كَعُنْقُودِ الثُّرَيَّا تَأَلَّقَتْ
كَواكِبُهُ فِي الأُفْقِ فَهْيَ سَوَافِرُ

12. In my memory they resemble apparitions
Though from afar on earth I watch over

١٢. تُمَثِّلُهَا الذِّكْرَى لِعَيْنِي كَأَنَّنِي
إِلَيْهَا عَلَى بُعْدٍ مِنَ الأَرْضِ نَاظِرُ

13. Sometimes fancying them real, other times
Melancholy shrouds my eyelids in gloom

١٣. فَطَوْرَاً أَخَالُ الظَّنَّ حَقَّاً وَتَارَةً
أَهِيمُ فَتَغْشَى مُقْلَتَيَّ السَّمَادِرُ

14. Ah, the distance between me and my loved ones!
And how minds were brought close in intimacy!

١٤. فَيَا بُعْدَ مَا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ أَحِبَّتِي
وَيَا قُرْبَ ما الْتَفَّتْ عَلَيهِ الضَّمائِرُ

15. Were it not for the soul’s hopes—its life—
No bird would have flown for me above the desert

١٥. وَلَوْلا أَمَانِي النَّفْسِ وَهْيَ حَياتُهَا
لَمَا طَارَ لِي فَوْقَ الْبَسِيطَةِ طَائِرُ

16. If days have parted us, to God we each
One day shall return, a destined journey

١٦. فَإِنْ تَكُنِ الأَيَّامُ فَرَّقْنَ بَيْنَنَا
فَكُلُّ امْرِئٍ يَوْمَاً إِلَى اللَّهِ صَائِرُ

17. There lies the abode, with breaths but sighs
To it, bodies but victims offered forth

١٧. هِيَ الدَّارُ مَا الأَنْفَاسُ إِلَّا نَهَائِبٌ
لَدَيْهَا وما الأَجْسَامُ إِلَّا عَقَائِرُ

18. When favorable one day, another morn wrongs,
Its favor a sword unjust upon the people

١٨. إِذَا أَحْسَنَتْ يَوْماً أَسَاءَتْ ضُحَى غَدٍ
فَإِحْسَانُهَا سَيْفٌ عَلَى النَّاسِ جَائِرُ

19. It raises a youth until his affair concludes
Then slaughters him as a beast by the butcher

١٩. تَرُبُّ الْفَتَى حَتَّى إِذَا تَمَّ أَمْرُهُ
دَهَتْهُ كَمَا رَبَّ الْبَهِيمَة جَازرُ

20. For each living being it sets a trap, unfailing
However much it sins against mankind, a tyrant

٢٠. لَهَا تَرَةٌ فِي كُلِّ حَيٍّ وَما لَهَا
عَلَى طُولِ مَا تَجْنِي عَلَى الْخَلْقِ وَاتِرُ

21. Fickle in the guises of love it dons
Hoping its companion not see through its act

٢١. كَثِيرَةُ أَلْوَانِ الْوِدَادِ مَلِيَّةٌ
بِأَنْ يَتَوَقَّاهَا الْقَرِينُ الْمُعَاشِرُ

22. Who views the world with the eye of a critic
Sees that with people it gambles and toys

٢٢. فَمَنْ نَظَرَ الدُّنْيَا بِحِكْمَةِ نَاقِدٍ
دَرَى أَنَّهَا بَيْنَ الأَنَامِ تُقَامِرُ

23. I suffered patiently what had befallen me
And when escapes fail, patience excuses one

٢٣. صَبَرْتُ عَلَى كُرْهٍ لِمَا قَدْ أَصَابَنِي
وَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ مَنْدُوحَةً فَهْوَ صَابِرُ

24. Wisdom amid adversity, when one is helpless,
Is not as worthy as when one is able

٢٤. وَما الْحِلْمُ عِنْدَ الْخَطْبِ وَالْمَرْءُ عَاجِزٌ
بِمُسْتَحْسَنٍ كَالْحِلْمِ وَالْمَرْءُ قَادِرُ

25. But when supporters are few and hopes fail,
Patience therein is the refuge for all

٢٥. وَلَكِنْ إِذَا قَلَّ النَّصِيرُ وَأَعْوَزَتْ
دَوَاعِي الْمُنى فَالصَّبْرُ فِيهِ الْمَعَاذِرُ

26. Let not my enemies gloat over me, for soon
I may attain what I fear and guard against

٢٦. فَلا يَشْمَتِ الأَعْدَاءُ بِي فَلَرُبَّمَا
وَصَلْتُ لِمَا أَرْجُوهُ مِمَّا أُحَاذِرُ

27. Affairs may yet go aright after crookedness
And the stumbling blocks may bring a man success

٢٧. فَقَدْ يَسْتَقِيمُ الأَمْرُ بَعْدَ اعْوِجَاجِهِ
وَتَنْهَضُ بِالْمَرْءِ الْجُدُوُد الْعَوَاثِرُ

28. In God, I have a hope by which wishes survive
The aspect of fancying shines, and events are kind

٢٨. وَلِي أَملٌ فِي اللَّهِ تَحْيَا بِهِ الْمُنَى
وَيُشْرِقُ وَجْهُ الظَّنِّ والْخَطْبُ كَاشِرُ

29. I have a stalwart spirit whom guile declines
And the struggle of days will eventually cease

٢٩. وَطِيدٌ يَزِلُّ الْكَيْدُ عَنْهُ وَتَنْقَضِي
مُجَاهَدَةُ الأَيَّامِ وَهْوَ مُثَابِرُ

30. When a man rests not in God against what
he dreads of fate, he is lost

٣٠. إِذَا الْمَرْءُ لَمْ يَرْكَنْ إِلَى اللَّهِ فِي الَّذِي
يُحَاذِرُهُ مِنْ دَهْرِهِ فَهْوَ خَاسِرُ

31. If he bears not patiently what befell him
Then when truth surfaces, he has no victor

٣١. وَإِنْ هُوَ لَمْ يَصْبِرْ عَلَى ما أَصَابَهُ
فَلَيْسَ لَهُ فِي مَعْرِضِ الْحَقِّ نَاصِرُ

32. He who tastes not the sweet and bitter of life
Is but a wild creature, fleeing and straying

٣٢. وَمَنْ لَمْ يَذُقْ حُلْوَ الزَّمَانِ وَمُرَّهُ
فَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا طَائِشُ اللُّبِّ نَافِرُ

33. Were it not for duties of leadership, no coward
Would withhold himself, or hero remain dormant

٣٣. وَلَوْلا تَكَالِيفُ السِّيَادَةِ لَمْ يَخِبْ
جَبَانٌ وَلَمْ يَحْوِ الْفَضِيلَةَ ثَائِرُ

34. Only seeking livelihood, every ascetic
Would restrain himself, and every man bear patiently

٣٤. تقلُّ دَوَاعِي النَّفْسِ وَهْيَ ضَعِيفَةٌ
وَتَقْوَى هُمُومُ الْقَلْبِ وَهْوَ مُغَامِرُ

35. Had the means of supremacy been through wealth
Every man of merit would seek wealth and trade

٣٥. وَكَيْفَ يَبِينُ الْفَضْلُ وَالنَّقْصُ فِي الْوَرَى
إِذَا لَمْ تَكُنْ سَوْمَ الرِّجَالِ الْمَآثِرُ

36. But noble souls scorn baseness, preferring
High-minded poverty to wealth degrading

٣٦. وَمَا حَمَلَ السَّيْفَ الْكَمِيُّ لِزِينَةٍ
وَلَكِنْ لأَمْرٍ أَوْجَبَتْهُ الْمَفَاخِرُ

37. I who covet honor am not deterred from its pursuit
By comfort, nor does destitution thwart my course

٣٧. إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ إِلَّا الْمَعِيشَةَ مَطْلَبٌ
فَكُلُّ زَهِيدٍ يُمْسِكُ النَّفْسَ جَابِرُ

38. Neither am I, if nearness visits me, smiling
Nor am I, if distance parts me, morose

٣٨. فَلَوْلا الْعُلا مَا أَرْسَلَ السَّهْمَ نَازِعٌ
وَلا شَهَرَ السَّيْفَ الْيَمَانِيَّ شَاهِرُ

39. Poverty, if honor is unstained, does not shame
As wealth, if one has no merit, does not honor

٣٩. مِنَ الْعَارِ أَنْ يَرْضَى الدَّنِيَّةَ مَاجِدٌ
وَيَقْبَلَ مَكْذُوبَ الْمُنَى وَهْوَ صَاغِرُ

40. When the flies of swords no longer roam
Its sheath in war is a conspicuous stigma

٤٠. إِذَا كُنْتَ تَخْشَى كُلَّ شَيءٍ مِنَ الرَّدى
فَكُلُّ الَّذِي في الْكَوْنِ لِلنَّفْسِ ضَائِرُ

41. If I have nothing now but a humble portion
Shared among family, absent and present

٤١. فَمِنْ صِحَّةِ الإِنْسَانِ ما فِيهِ سُقْمُهُ
وَمِنْ أَمْنِهِ مَا فَاجَأَتْهُ الْمَخَاطِرُ

42. How many a hero has time made decay
And how many a lord has fate brought low

٤٢. عَلَيَّ طِلابُ الْعِزِّ مِنْ مُسْتَقَرِّهِ
وَلا ذَنْبَ لِي إِنْ عَارَضَتْنِي الْمَقَادِرُ

43. What stalwart sword did dullness not strike
And what sturdy steed did hooves not betray

٤٣. فَمَا كُلُّ مَحْلُولِ الْعَرِيكَةِ خَائِبٌ
وَلا كُلُّ مَحْبُوكِ التَّرِيكَةِ ظَافِرُ

44. Truth shall one day be clear to the beholder
And the secrets of scheming souls will emerge

٤٤. فَمَاذَا عَسَى الأَعْدَاءُ أَنْ يَتَقَوَّلُوا
عَليَّ وعِرْضِي نَاصِحُ الْجَيْبِ وَافِرُ

45. This is but a cloud, then it shall dissipate
Its darkness, and God aids whom He wills

٤٥. فَلِي فِي مرَادِ الْفَضْلِ خَيْرُ مَغَبَّةٍ
إِذَا شَانَ حَيَّاً بِالْخِيَانَةِ ذَاكِرُ

46. Though after hopes were shared among
The beloved, prison gloom closed in around me

٤٦. مَلَكْتُ عُقَابَ المُلكِ وَهْيَ كَسِيرَةٌ
وَغَادَرْتُهَا فِي وَكْرِهَا وَهْيَ طَائِرُ

47. Yet wait, O people of the world, for we
Are bound for an end where all is manifest

٤٧. وَلَوْ رُمْتُ مَا رَام امْرُؤٌ بِخِيَانَةٍ
لَصَبَّحنِي قِسْطٌ مِنَ الْمَالِ غَامِرُ

48. To it labored breaths will calm, and twist
Around the celestial sphere its burdens

٤٨. وَلَكِنْ أَبَتْ نَفْسِي الْكَرِيمَةُ سَوْأَةً
تُعَابُ بِهَا والدَّهْرُ فِيهِ الْمعايِرُ

49. There truth rises and clearly appears
While the edifice of falsehood stumbles and falls

٤٩. فَلا تَحْسَبَنَّ الْمَالَ يَنْفَعُ رَبَّهُ
إِذَا هُوَ لَمْ تَحْمَدْ قِرَاهُ العَشَائِرُ

50. And soon the whole matter will conclude
For no first exists without a last to follow

٥٠. فَقَدْ يَسْتَجِمُّ الْمَالُ وَالْمَجْدُ غَائِبٌ
وَقَدْ لا يَكُونُ الْمَالُ والْمَجْدُ حاضِرُ

٥١. وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَسْبَابَ السِّيَادَةِ بِالْغِنَى
لَكَاثَرَ رَبَّ الْفَضْلِ بِالْمَالِ تَاجِرُ

٥٢. فَلا غَرْوَ أَنْ حُزْتُ الْمَكَارِمَ عَارِياً
فَقَدْ يَشْهَدُ السَّيْفُ الْوَغَى وَهْوَ حَاسِرُ

٥٣. أَنَا الْمَرءُ لا يَثْنِيهِ عَنْ دَرَكِ الْعُلا
نَعِيمٌ وَلا تَعْدُو عَلَيْهِ الْمَفَاقِرُ

٥٤. قَؤُولٌ وَأَحْلامُ الرِّجَالِ عَوَازِبٌ
صَؤُولٌ وَأَفْوَاهُ الْمَنَايَا فَوَاغِرُ

٥٥. فَلا أَنَا إِنْ أَدْنَانِيَ الْوَجْدُ بَاسِمٌ
وَلا أَنَا إِنْ أَقْصَانِيَ الْعُدْمُ بَاسِرُ

٥٦. فَمَا الْفَقْرُ إِنْ لَمْ يَدْنَسِ الْعِرْضُ فَاضِحٌ
وَلا الْمَالُ إِنْ لَمْ يَشْرُفِ الْمَرْءُ سَاتِرُ

٥٧. إِذَا ما ذُبَابُ السَّيفِ لَمْ يَكُ مَاضِياً
فَحِلْيَتُهُ وَصْمٌ لَدَى الْحَرْبِ ظَاهِرُ

٥٨. فَإِنْ كُنْتُ قَدْ أَصْبَحْتُ فَلَّ رَزِيَّةٍ
تَقَاسَمَهَا فِي الأَهْلِ بَادٍ وحَاضِرُ

٥٩. فَكَمْ بَطَلٍ فَلَّ الزَّمَانُ شَبَاتَهُ
وَكَمْ سَيِّدٍ دَارتْ عَلَيْهِ الدَّوائِرُ

٦٠. وَأَيُّ حُسَامٍ لَمْ تُصِبْهُ كَلالَةٌ
وَأَيُّ جَوَادٍ لَمْ تَخُنْهُ الْحَوافِرُ

٦١. فَسَوْفَ يَبِينُ الحَقُّ يَوْماً لِنَاظِرٍ
وَتَنْزُو بِعَوْرَاءِ الْحقُودِ السَّرائِرُ

٦٢. وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا غَمْرَةٌ ثُمَّ تَنْجَلِي
غَيَابَتُهَا وَاللَّهُ مَنْ شَاءَ نَاصِرُ

٦٣. فَقَدْ حَاطَني في ظُلْمَةِ الْحَبْسِ بَعْدَما
تَرَامَتْ بِأَفْلاذِ الْقُلُوبِ الْحَنَاجِرُ

٦٤. فَمَهْلاً بَنِي الدُّنْيا عَلَيْنَا فَإِنَّنَا
إِلَى غَايَةٍ تَنْفَتُّ فِيهَا الْمَرائِرُ

٦٥. تَطُولُ بِهَا الأَنْفَاسُ بُهْراً وَتَلْتَوِي
عَلَى فَلْكَةِ السَّاقَيْنِ فِيهَا الْمآزِرُ

٦٦. هُنَالِكَ يَعْلُو الْحَقُّ وَالْحَقُّ وَاضِحٌ
وَيَسْفُلُ كَعْبُ الزُّورِ وَالزُّورُ عَاثِرُ

٦٧. وَعَمَّا قَلِيلٍ يَنْتَهِي الأَمْرُ كُلُّهُ
فَمَا أَوَّلٌ إِلَّا وَيَتْلُوهُ آخِرُ
