١. فُؤَادِي وَالْهَوَى قَدَحٌ وَخَمْرُ
أَمَا في ذَاكَ لِي طَرَبٌ وَسُكْرُ
2. They blame me for my infatuation with Layla,

٢. يَلُومُونِي عَلَى كَلَفِي بِلَيْلَى
وَلَيْلَى في سَمَاءِ الْحُسْنِ بَدْرُ

٣. لَهَا خَدٌّ بِهِ لِلْحُسْنِ وَرْدٌ
وَلَحْظٌ فِيهِ لِلْمَلَكَيْنِ سِحْرُ
4. She is coy with me in her acquiescence, wandering,
Is there in the way of acquiescence any blame?
٤. تَضِنُّ عَلَيَّ بِالتَّسْلِيمِ تِيهاً
وَهَلْ فِي سُنَّةِ التَّسْلِيمِ وِزْرُ
5. Her forehead gleams from beneath her veil,
As the dawn shines through the darkness.
٥. يَلُوحُ جَبِينُهَا في طُرَّتَيْهَا
كَما أَوْفَى عَلَى الظَّلْمَاءِ فَجْرُ
6. And she smiles from perfect rubies,
It is said by the judgment of taste, they are lips.
٦. وَتَبْسِمُ عَنْ جُمَانٍ فِي عَقِيقٍ
يُقَالُ لَهُ بِحُكْمِ الذَّوْقِ ثَغْرُ
