1. The words were intoxicated by the wine of your speech,
And the glances began to speak with your conscience.
١. سَكِرَتْ بِخَمْرِ حَدِيثِكِ الأَلْفَاظُ
وَتَكَلَّمَتْ بِضَمِيرِكِ الأَلْحَاظُ
2. O doll, were it not for propriety, both the preachers
And the deadly would have fallen in love with you.
٢. يَا دُمْيَةً لَوْلا التَّقِيَّةُ لاسْتَوَتْ
فِي حُبِّهَا الْفُتَّاكُ والْوُعَّاظُ
3. Why did I give you my companionship and you rewarded me
With a fire that rages inside my ribs?
٣. مَا لِي مَنَحْتُكِ خُلَّتِي وَجَزَيْتِنِي
نَاراً لَهَا بَيْنَ الضُّلُوعِ شُوَاظُ
4. Why didn't you show kindness when you had me captivated?
The generous have often shown kindness even when their hearts were resentful.
٤. هَلَّا مَنَنْتِ إِذِ امْتَلَكْتِ فَطَالَمَا
مَنَّ الْكَرِيمُ وَقَلْبُهُ مُغْتَاظُ
5. I abandoned my whole tribe for your sake,
And now their hearts are always harsh towards me.
٥. فَلَقَدْ هَجَرْتُ إِلَيْكِ جُلَّ عَشِيرَتِي
فَقُلُوبُهُمْ أَبَداً عَلَيَّ غِلاظُ
6. You banished sleep from my eyes, leaving them
Only tears and wakefulness at night.
٦. وَنَفَيْتِ عَنْ عَيْنِي الْمَنَامَ فَمَا لَهَا
غَيْرَ الْمَدَامِعِ وَالسُّهَادِ لَمَاظُ
7. Yet no arrows have been shot for anyone but you
With my blood, nor did anyone judge me but you.
٧. هَذَا وَمَا اخْتَضَبَتْ لِغَيْرِكِ أَسْهُمٌ
بِدَمِي وَلا احْتَكَمَتْ عَلَيَّ لِحَاظُ
8. So why do you listen to the jealous backbiter
When he comes to you with tales about me?
٨. فَعَلامَ تَسْتَمِعِينَ مَا يَأْتِي بِهِ
عَنِّي إِلَيْكِ الْحَاسِدُ الْجَوَّاظُ
9. Pray forgiveness for a lover if he commits
A sin in the religion of your love, for passion itself preserves morality.
٩. فَصِلي مُحِبَّاً مَا أَصَابَ خَطِيئَةً
فِي دين حُبِّكِ وَالْغَرَامُ حِفَاظُ
10. Love you until it does not incline in your love
To cause harm or to betray.
١٠. يَهْوَاكِ حَتَّى لا يَمِيلُ بِطَبْعِهِ
فِي حُبِّكِ الإِيْذَاءُ وَالإِحْفَاظُ
11. My wakeful eyes will not visit slumber
As long as ardour and passion remain alert.
١١. نَابِي الْمَضَاجِعِ لا تَزُورُ جُفُونَهُ
سِنَةُ الْكَرَى وَأُولُو الْهَوَى أَيْقَاظُ
12. Bearing what, if some of it were borne
By the people of love and passion, they would have desisted.
١٢. مُتَحَمِّلٌ مَا لَوْ تَحَمَّلَ بَعْضَهُ
أَهْلُ الْمَحَبَّةِ وَالْغَرَامِ لَفَاظُوا
13. When it began, they took their seats in what transpired
Of his tears, and when he sighed, they departed.
١٣. فَإِذَا اسْتَهَلَّ تَرَبَّعُوا فِي ما جَرَى
مِنْ دَمْعِهِ وَإِذَا تَنَفَّسَ قَاظُوا
14. Such is the love that made those breasts constrict
And diminished those coffers.
١٤. هَذَا هُوَ الْحُبُّ الَّذِي ضَاقَتْ بِهِ
تِلْكَ الصُّدُورُ وَقَلَّتِ الْحُفَّاظُ
