لأمر ما تحيرت العقول

1. For something unknowable, minds are perplexed,
Do creatures know what they say?

١. لأَمْرٍ مَا تَحَيَّرَتِ الْعُقُولُ
فَهَلْ تَدْرِي الْخَلائِقُ مَا تَقُولُ

2. The sun disappears, then returns to us,
And the plants wither, then turn green.

٢. تَغِيبُ الشَّمْسُ ثُمَّ تَعُودُ فِينَا
وَتَذْوَى ثُمَّ تَخْضَرُّ الْبُقُولُ

3. It is the nature of things, ever-repeating,
As the fields are stripped bare, then clothed again.

٣. طَبَائِعُ لا تُغبُّ مُرَدّدَاتٍ
كَمَا تَعْرَى وَتَشْتَمِلُ الْحُقُولُ

4. Ignorant and wise are equal, when days flow by them,
And realities change, as do sayings.

٤. فَسِيَّانِ الْجَهُولُ إِذَا تَنَاهَتْ
بِهِ الأَيَّامُ وَالْفَطِنُ الْعَقُولُ

5. Existence passes through phases, one after another,
Truths differ, as do words.

٥. يَزُولُ الْخَلْقُ طَوْرَاً بَعْدَ طَوْرٍ
وَتَخْتَلِفُ الْحَقَائِقُ وَالنُّقُولُ

6. Conjectures are not based on certainty,
They cannot be relied upon, nor can sayings hold true.

٦. فَمَا جَرَتِ الظُّنُونُ عَلَى يَقِينٍ
تَفِيءُ بِهِ وَلا صَحَّ الْمَقُولُ
