O my people—behold a grief-stricken man,
O bestower of kindness, secretly and openly,
O you who, in color, resemble your own conduct,
O one who turns away from me with an averted face,
O you who turn away and do not look back,
O you whose fingertips are like a rain cloud drifting by night,
O who will aid sore eyelids,
O you who vie in numbers with note-
O Hind, do not disapprove of my roaming the earth.
O recompense for something lost,
A yellow sapphire has been set
O who will help a lovesick soul?
They say, “Repent,” while the cup is in a graceful youth’s hand,
The night sleeps; I stay awake through it.
