Ah, the hoarseness that never ceases

of a girl whose rhythm is unbroken!

She has strained her throat, though one may reap from

the throat's strain a comfort for the ears.

So she grew ever hoarser and lowered

the strings' pitches after their rise,

like a lover's moan, brought low—

his voice of lament—by the intensity of pain.
