يامَنْO who لروُحٍfor a soul كَلِفَتْhas become lovesick
ومنand who لعينٍfor an eye ذَرَفَتْhas shed tears
O who will help a lovesick soul?
O you whose soul is burdened
And who will help an eye that sheds tears?
And whose eyes have shed tears
مُنَهَّلَةٌstreaming عَبَرْتُهاits tears
كأنّهاas though it قَدْalready طُرِفَتْhad been struck
Its tears stream down,
Flowing down as if drawn
As though it had been struck.
As though they were led
إنif أَمِنَتْfelt safe فَاضَتْoverflowed وإِنْand if
خافَتْfeared رَقيباًa watcher وقَفَتْstopped
If it feels safe, it overflows; and if
If they feel safe they flow
It fears a watcher, it stops.
If fearing a watcher, they stop
وإنّماand only بُكاؤُهاits weeping
علىfor ليالٍnights سَلَفَتْhave passed
And its weeping is only
Their weeping is but
For nights gone by.
For nights gone by
