تُقْضَّى بِهَا أَيَّامُهُمْ فِي التَّنَعُّمِ
May the bearers of swords enjoy their idleness,
Congratulations to the sword bearers for their idleness
in which their days are spent in luxury.
With which they spend their days in luxury
فَكَمْfor how many فِيْهِمُamong them مِنْof دَائِمِconstant in الأَمْنِsafety لَمْnot يُرَعْbe alarmed

بِحَرْبٍ وَلَمْ يَنْهَدْ لِقِرْنٍ مُصَمِّمِ
For many a man among them enjoys constant safety, unalarmed
How many of them live in perpetual safety
by war, never having advanced against a resolute foe.
Without fighting in wars or charging with intent spears

حُسَامَاً سَلِيْمَ الحَدِّ لَمْ يَتَثَلَّمِ
He goes out evening and morning, having fastened in his baldric
Going and coming with swords girded in scabbards
a keen sword with an intact edge, never chipped.
Blades smooth and unnotched by blows
وَيَمْكُثُand stays لاَnot يَلْقَىencounter عَدُوَّاًan enemy فَإِنْand if غَزَاcampaigns

فَوَاحِدَةً فِي الدَّهْرِ لَيْسَ بِتَوْأَمِ
And he stays without meeting an enemy; if he campaigns,
Remaining without meeting a foe, and if they march to war
then a single campaign in a lifetime, with no twin.
It is but once in an age, not oft repeated
وَلَكِنْand yet ذَوُوpossessors of الأَقْلاَمِthe pens فِيin كُلِّevery سَاعَةٍhour

But as for the wielders of pens, at every hour,
But the men of letters, their swords at every hour
their swords never dry of blood.
Are never dry of blood
