I did not rise until her melodious voice called me:

Rise, for clouds are streaming over the dawn.

So I rose, while the clouds were at the height of their fury,

seeking wakefulness for my eyelids, but finding none.

Then she met me with the likeness of the rising sun,

while clouds swept on and the full moon was missing.

She goes about serving it, bearing a body of water enclosing

a lingering spark of fire whose body is hail.

    فَكُلَّما أُطْفِئَتْ بالماءِ تَتَّقِدُ

    Mixing heightens the burning in its depths;

so whenever it is quenched with water, it blazes up.

As though ruby had lined a jewel—

a hollow one, for which silver mail was wrought.
