An inkwell a moon generously bestowed on me,

lovely in form and pleasing in character.

    نَاطَتْ بِهِ المَكْرُمَاتُ فِي عُنُقِي

    A jewel singled me out with a jewel;

through him, generous favors hung about my neck.

White, while the ink in its depths

is black as musk, intensely fragrant.

Like the whiteness of eyes, adorned

by the darkness of the pupils mingled with it.

    Its ink seems, when

our pens scatter its dew upon the paper,

like kohl drawn by tears from eyes

wide, then borne by them onto pure whiteness.

Mute, yet it is for us

an aid in learning the most eloquent speech.
