أُنَاسٌsome people أَعْرَضُواthey turned away عَنَّاfrom us
بِلاَwithout جُرْمٍwrongdoing وَلاَand no مَعْنَىreason
Some people turned away from us,
People turned away from us
through no fault of ours and for no reason.
With no fault or meaning
أَسَاءُواthey thought ill ظَنَّهُمْtheir opinion فِيْنَاof us
فَهَلاَّso why not أَحْسَنُواthey thought well الظَّنَّاthe opinion
They thought ill of us;
They mistook their judgment of us
so why did they not think well?
Why did they not think well of us
وَخَلَّوْنَاand they left us وَلَوْand if شَاءُواthey wished
لَكَانُواthey would have been كَالَّذِيlike what كُنَّاwe were
And they left us; had they wished,
And left us, though if they wished
they would have been as we were.
They would have been as we were
فَإِنْso if عَادُواthey returned لَنَاto us عُدْنَاwe returned
وَإِنْand if خَانُواthey betrayed فَمَاthen not خُنَّاwe betrayed
So if they return to us, we shall return;
If they return to us, we'll return
and if they betray us, we have not betrayed them.
If they betray, we did not betray
وَإِنْand if كَانُواthey were قَدِalready اسْتَغْنُواthey became self-sufficient
فَإِنَّاthen indeed we عَنْهُمُof them أَغْنَىless in need
And if they have no need of us,
If they became self-sufficient
then we have even less need of them.
We are more self-sufficient than them
