    A cloud whose tears overflow,

and whose robes are black and white.

It weeps, and through its long

    weeping the luxuriant meadow laughs.

    And I have companions whose

poetic gifts are seas that never ebb.

And we have a singer too exalted in

rank for al-Gharid to match him.

And wine has grown costly for the

    poets since verse was cheapened.

And on you, for generosity, has relied

one who went forth without strength to rise.

    ي عٍنْدَهُ الجَاهُ العَرِيْضُ

    And surely you are the hopeful one's hope;

    with him lies far-reaching influence.

So grant that red wine, whose musk

    the crushed aromatics envy.

    And know that deeds of

    kindness are mostly loans.
