أَصْبَحْتُI have become لاَno مَالَwealth لِيfor me سِوَىexcept الأَمَلِhope
وَأَنَّنِيand that I عَامِلٌa worker بِلاَwithout عَمَلِwork
I have come to have no wealth but hope,
I have become with no wealth but hope
And I am a worker without work.
And that I work without work
وَلِيand I have غَرِيْمٌa creditor مُوَاصِلٌpersistent خَتِلٌcrafty

And I have a persistent, crafty creditor;
And I have a persistent cunning creditor
His superior cunning has thwarted my stratagems.
Whose guiles have wearied my guiles
مَاnever حُدَّwas set بَيْنِيbetween me وَبَيْنَهُand between him أَجَلٌa deadline
إِلاَّexcept تَوَهَّمْتُI imagined أَنَّهُthat it أَجَلِيmy death
No deadline was ever set between me and him
Nothing stands between us except
Without my imagining it to be my death.
I imagined he is my appointed time
عَذُبَتْgrew sweet بِالرَّشْفِwith sipping مِنْهُof his شَفَةٌa lip

A lip of his grew sweet with sipping;
A lip has been sweetened by sipping
Sucking it is sweeter than attaining hope.
Its suckling is sweeter than attaining hopes

And redness covered it, mingled with duskiness,
And redness has risen in a cheek
Borrowing its color from the dye of bashfulness.
That borrows its color from the dye of shyness

مِنْfrom فُؤَادِيmy heart عَلَّhe drank again فِيْهِin it وَنَهَلْand drank his first draught
I thought it was traces of blood
It is, while I passed, traces of blood
From my heart, where he drank once and then again.
From my heart, so it overflowed and dripped
