يَاO خَاضِبَdyer of الشَّيْبِgray hair وَالأَيَّامُand the days تُظْهِرُهُreveal it
يَا خَاضِبَ الشَّيْبِ وَالأَيَّامُ تُظْهِرُهُ
هَذَاthis شَبَابٌyouth لَعَمْرُby the life of اللَّهِGod مَصْنُوعُartificial
هَذَا شَبَابٌ لَعَمْرُ اللَّهِ مَصْنُوعُ
O you who dye gray hair while the days reveal it,
O you who reproach grey hair though days reveal it,
This youth, by the life of God, is artificial.
This is youth, by God's life, that is fabricated!
أَذْكَرْتَنِيyou reminded me قَوْلَthe saying of ذِيone possessing لُبِّwisdom وَتَجْرِبَةٍand experience
أَذْكَرْتَنِي قَوْلَ ذِي لُبِّ وَتَجْرِبَةٍ
فِيin مِثْلِهِthe like of it لَكَfor you تَأْدِيْبٌinstruction وَتَقْرِيْعُand rebuke
فِي مِثْلِهِ لَكَ تَأْدِيْبٌ وَتَقْرِيْعُ
You reminded me of the saying of one with wisdom and experience:
You reminded me of the words of an experienced man -
In such a saying lie instruction and rebuke for you.
For the likes of you, there is chastening and rebuke.
إِنَّindeed الجَدِيْدَnew cloth إِذَاwhen ماemphatic particle زِيْدَis added فِيto خَلَقِa worn-out garment
إِنَّ الجَدِيْدَ إِذَا ما زِيْدَ فِي خَلَقِ
تَبَيَّنَdiscern النَّاسُthe people أَنَّthat الثَّوْبَthe garment مَرْقُوعُpatched
تَبَيَّنَ النَّاسُ أَنَّ الثَّوْبَ مَرْقُوعُ
Indeed, when new cloth is added to a worn-out garment,
When the new is added to creation,
People discern that the garment is patched.
People see that the garment is patched.
