I wished, in both states of joy and sorrow,

and in both conditions of parting and reunion.

Parting was decreed; I grew gray from fear of parting.

And who does not grow gray at separation?

And we embraced; I grew gray from the fragrance of your breaths,

when you favored me with an embrace.

They are perfume; perfume and parting bring gray hair

    swiftly to kings and lovers.
