It is a day of doubt, Ali,

and its harm has been feared since it came to be.

And the air's robe is musk-scented,

its bordered cloak fragrant with ambergris.

    And the water is silver-shirted,

and the earth's mantle is green.

    The plants' blossoms are raised

in the earth by drops of dew that have fallen.

And a man of sense, if he encounters this

day in Ramadan, breaks his fast.

And we have a few leftovers to be

    our day's allotted sustenance,

and yellow wine whose years were witnessed

    by Kisra and Caesar.

So bestir yourself for us; let us quaff from

whichever of our cups is largest.

Or do not—for you are a fool

if you say that you will be excused.
