جَاءَتْshe came بِعُودٍwith an oud مِثْلِهَاlike her نَافِرٍdiscordant
كَأَنَّهُas though it were نَقْنَقَةُcroaking الضِّفْدَعِof the frog
She came with an oud as jarring as herself,
as though it were a frog’s croaking.
مُضْطَرِبُunsteady الأَوْتَارِthe strings مَنْقُوصُهَاlacking some of them
مُسْتَقْبَحُugly المَدْفَعِthe opening والمَقْطَعِand the ending
Its strings unsteady, some of them missing,
ugly in its opening and its close.
يَوَدُّwishes مَنْwhoever يَسْمَعُhears أَوْتَارَهُits strings
لَوْif only فَقَدَhe lost السَّمْعَhis hearing فَلَمْand so did not يَسْمَعِhear
Whoever hears its strings wishes
he had lost his hearing and so could not hear.
فَأَقْبَلَتْthen she began تَضْرِبُplaying غَيْرَother than الذِيwhat
تُحْسِنُshe can play well والنَّغْمَةُand the melody لَمْwas not تُتْبَعِfollowed
Then she began to play something other than what
she could play well, and the melody went unfollowed.
كَأَنَّمَاas though قِسْمَةُdivision تَأْلِيْفِهَاher composition
مُثَلَّثٌa triangle مُخْتَلِفُunequal الأَضْلُعِthe sides
As though the divisions of her composition
formed a triangle with unequal sides.
