يَاO لَقْومٍpeople (appealed to) لِلزَّائِرِfor the visitor المُجْتَازِpassing through
يَا لَقْومٍ لِلزَّائِرِ المُجْتَازِ
زَارَhe visited أَحْبَابَهُhis loved ones عَلَىin أَوْفَازِhaste
زَارَ أَحْبَابَهُ عَلَى أَوْفَازِ
O people, behold the visitor passing through!
O people, for the passerby visitor
He visited his loved ones in haste.
Who visited his loved ones at the peaks
زَارَhe visited يَقْظَانَawake مِثْلَlike ماas (with the preceding word) زَارَhe visited فِيin النَّوْsleep (continued on the next line)
زَارَ يَقْظَانَ مِثْلَ ما زَارَ فِي النَّوْ
مِcompletion of “sleep” فَيَاso, oh فَرْحَتِيmy joy لَهُin him واهْتِزَازِيand my exhilaration
مِ فَيَا فَرْحَتِي لَهُ واهْتِزَازِي
He came in waking life, just as he came in sleep—
He visited while awake just as he did in sleep
so, oh, my joy in him and my exhilaration!
Oh my joy for him and my trembling
لَمْnot يَكُنْwas بَيْنَbetween أَنْthat دَنَاhe drew near وَتَنَاءَىand he drew away
لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ أَنْ دَنَا وَتَنَاءَى
عَنْكَfrom you إِلاَّexcept زَمَانَthe time of خَطْفَةِa snatch by بَازِيa hawk
عَنْكَ إِلاَّ زَمَانَ خَطْفَةِ بَازِي
Between his drawing near and drawing away
Between when he approached and moved away from you
from you lay only the time of a hawk’s snatch.
Was nothing but the time of a falcon's swoop
