مَنْwho عَذِيْرِيmy defender مِنْagainst عِذَارَىthe two cheek-locks of رَشَإِa young gazelle
عَرًّضَexposed القَلْبَthe heart لِأَسْبَابِto the causes of التَلَّفْruin
Who will defend me against the two cheek-locks of a young gazelle
Who can excuse me for my shortcomings
who exposed my heart to the causes of ruin?
When I have exposed my heart to ruin?
زَيْدَwas increased حُسْنَاًin beauty وَضِيَاءًand radiance بِهِمَاthrough them both
فَهُوَso he الآنَnow كَبَدْرِlike a full moon فِيin سَدَفْdarkness
Through them he grew in beauty and radiance,
He increased in beauty and radiance
so now he is like a full moon in darkness.
Until he was like the full moon in its halo.
جَمَشَاthey both caressed خَدَّيْهِhis two cheeks ثُمَّthen انْعَطَفَاthey both curved
آهِah مَاhow أَحْسَنَlovely ذَاكَthat المُنْعَطَفْcurve
They both caressed his cheeks, then curved.
He inclined his cheek then turned away—
Ah, how lovely that curve!
Ah, how graceful was that turning!
عَلِمَknew الشَّعْرُthe hair الَّذِيthat عَاجَلَهُhad assailed him
أَنَّهُthat it جَارَacted unjustly عَلَيْهِtoward him فَوَقَفْso it stopped
The hair that had assailed him knew
Poetry, which he reproached,
that it had wronged him, so it stopped.
Knew to stop short of reproaching him.
فَهْوَso it فِيin وَقْفَتِهِits halting مُعْتَرِفٌconfesses
بالتَّنَاهِيto going to extremes فِيin التَّعَدِّيtransgression وَالسَّرَفْand excess
Thus, in its halting, it confesses
In stopping it admits
to going to extremes in transgression and excess.
To excess in transgressing and extravagance.
