مَضَىhas passed رَمَضَانُRamadan قَدْindeed أَدَّيْتُI fulfilled فِيْهِin it
حُقُوقَduties owed to اللَّهِGod قُرْآنَاًQur’an recitation وَصَوْمَاand fasting
Ramadan has passed; in it you duly discharged
Ramadan has passed; in it I fulfilled
the duties owed to God, through Qur’an-recitation and fasting.
The duties owed to God: Qur’an recitation and fasting.
وَجَاءَand has come الفِطْرُEid al-Fitr فَالْهُso make merry الآنَnow فِيْهِduring it
وَلاَand do not تَسْمَعْlisten لِمَنْto anyone who يَلْحَاكَreproaches you لَوْمَاblame
Eid al-Fitr has come; make merry in it now,
And Eid al-Fitr has come, so now make merry during it,
and heed no one who reproaches you.
And heed no blame from anyone who reproaches you.
وَعَدِّلْand make even قِسْمَةَthe division of الأَيّامِthe days قَصْفَاًrevelry
وَعَدْلُand justice رِيَاسَةٍin governance يَوْمَاًone day وَيَوْمَاand another day
Apportion the days equitably for revelry;
And apportion the days evenly between revelry
and the equitable measure of leadership is two days and one day.
And just governance—a day for each.
وَلَيْلُكَand your night شَطْرُhalf of عُمْرِكَyour life فَاغْتَنِمْهُso make the most of it
وَلاَand do not تَذْهَبْdo away بِنِصْفِwith half of العُمْرِlife نَوْمَاin sleep
Your night is half your life, so seize it;
And your night is half your life, so make the most of it,
do not let it—half a lifetime—pass away in sleep.
And do not squander half your life in sleep.
