لِحْيَةٌa beard قُوبِلَتْwas treated بِغَيْرِwith anything but الجَمِيْلِkindness
It sprouted from him in the ugliest fashion—
a beard treated with anything but kindness.
لَمْnot يَدَعْهَاhe let it تَطُولُgrow long حَتَّىuntil عَلاَهَاcovered it
وَضَحُwhiteness الشَّيْبِof gray hair فِيin الزَّمَانِthe time الطَّوِيْلِlong
He never let it grow long until it was covered
by gray hair’s whiteness as the long years passed.
مَلَّhe grew weary مِنْof حَلْقِهَاshaving it فَشَابَتْso it turned gray وَلَكِنْand yet
شَيْبُهَاits grayness كَانَwas كَامِنَاًhidden فِيin الأُصُولِthe roots
He tired of shaving it, so it turned gray; yet
its grayness had been hidden in the roots.
فَرَأَيْنَاهُso we saw him بِالْعَشِيِّin the evening غُلاَمَاًa youth
وَغَدَوْنَاand by morning we were نَعُدُّهُcounting him فِيamong الكُهُولِthe middle-aged men
So we saw him in the evening as a youth,
and by morning we counted him among the middle-aged.
لَمْnot يَكُنْthere was بَيْنَbetween مُرْدَةٍbeardlessness وَمَشِيْبٍand gray hair

There was no interval between beardlessness and gray hair,
though things have their distinct stages.
