جَعَلَتْshe began تَأَمَّلْto study زُرْقَةًa blue hue فِيin خَاتَمِيmy ring
وَتَقُولُand she says فَصُّكَyour gemstone ذَاthis لِبَاسُgarb المَأْتَمِmourning
She began to study the blue hue in my ring,
You gazed at the blueness in my ring
and said, "This gem of yours is mourning garb."
And said, “Why does this attire belong to grief?”
فَأَجَبْتُهَاso I answered her مُذْsince مَاتَdied وَصْلُكِunion with you وانْقَضَىand ended
بَكَّيْتُهُI wept over it بِدَمٍwith blood وَدَمْعٍand tears سَاجِمِstreaming
So I answered her, "Since union with you died and ended,
Since your love died and came to an end,
I have wept over it with blood and streaming tears.
I cried it in blood and in streaming tears.
وَرَغِبْتُand I wished فِيfor لُبْسِwearing الحِدَادِmourning garb لِأَنَّهُbecause it is
لُبْسُthe garb الحَزِيْنَةِof the grieving woman وَالحَزِيْنِand the grieving man الهَائِمِdistraught
And I wished to wear mourning garb, for it is
And I wished to wear the garb of mourning, for
the garb of the grieving woman and the grieving, distraught man.
It is the garb of the sorrowful, the wandering grief-stricken.
وَخَشِيْتُand I feared إِنْif أَنَاI فِيin الثِّيَابِthe clothes لَبِسْتُهُI wore it
أَنْthat يَفْطِنُواthey would notice فَلَبِسْتُهُso I wore it فِيin خَاتَمِيmy ring
And I feared, if I wore it in my clothes,
And I feared if I wore it openly
that they would notice; so I wore it in my ring."
They would guess, so I wore it on my ring.
