And a slave girl who wins over hearts,

And gazes, wounding their very cores.

    Whenever she sings, everything grows—

Even the lifeless—and listens to her tones.

And the earth sways for her—or almost

Is life restored to its dead.

She intends to unite with me, then has second thoughts,

And fear of her mistress holds her back.

I wore amulets made from her writings,

And kept inhaling the scent of her greetings.

Yet that only increased my longing

For her nearness and whispered conversation with her.
