عُنُجُcoquetry اللَّحْظِof the glance وَلِيْنُand softness المَنْطِقُof speech
مَلَكَاboth possessed قَلْبِيmy heart عَلَيَّdespite me فَشَقِيso it grew wretched
The deep black of her glance and the softness of her speech
The coquetry of her glance and the softness of her speech
have mastered my heart against me and left it wretched.
Both seized my heart despite me, and it grew wretched.
أَقْبَلَتْshe approached تَهْتَزُّswaying فِيin مِشْيَتِهَاher gait
هِرَّةَa she-cat (as written) الغُصْنِof the bough الرَّطِيْبِtender المُورِقِleafy
She came forward, swaying as she walked—
She approached, swaying as she walked,
with the sway of a fresh, leafy bough.
A she-cat of the tender, leafy bough (as written; possibly intended: the bough’s sway).
فِيin حَدَادٍmourning black تَتَّقِيshe wards off العَيْنَthe evil eye بِهِwith it
وَلَقَدْand indeed حُقَّit is fitting لَهَاfor her أَنْto تَتَّقِيguard herself
Clad in mourning black, she wards off the evil eye with it;
In mourning black, with which she wards off the evil eye,
and surely she has every right to guard against it.
And indeed she has every reason to guard herself.
هِيَshe كَالْوَرْدَةِlike a rose فِيin سَوْسَنَةٍan iris
أَوْor كَرَاحٍlike wine فِيin زُجَاجٍglass أَزْرَقِblue
She is like a rose within a lily,
She is like a rose within an iris,
or like wine within azure glass.
Or like wine in blue glass.
