شَكَوْتُI complained إِلَىto مَرْحَبٍMarhab عِلَّةًan illness
فَصَرَّحَso he spoke plainly فِيconcerning الرَّاحِwine لِيto me بِالْمَلاَمِwith reproach
I complained to Marhab of an ailment,
I complained to Marhab of an illness,
And he spoke plainly, blaming me for wine.
so he openly reproached me over wine.
وَقَالَand he said أَخَافُI fear غَلِيْظَheavy الشَّرَابِwine
وَلَسْتُand I do not أَخَافُfear غَلِيْظَheavy الطَّعَامِfood
He said, “I fear potent drink,
And he said: “I fear heavy wine,
Though I do not fear heavy food.
but I do not fear heavy food.
وَأَنْتَand you لَطِيْفٌdelicate حَدِيْدُfiery المِزَاجِconstitution
نَحِيْفُthin الجَوَارِحِthe limbs عَارِيbare العِظَامِthe bones
You are delicate, of a fiery constitution,
And you are delicate, fiery in constitution,
Thin of limb, your bones laid bare.
thin of limb, your bones laid bare.
فَلاَso do not تَجْمَعَنًّever heap up عَلَيْكَupon yourself الضَّنَىwasting sickness
بِنَارِwith the fire of المِزَاجِthe constitution وَنَارِand the fire of المُدَامِwine
So do not heap wasting sickness upon yourself
So never heap wasting sickness upon yourself
With the fire of your constitution and the fire of wine.
with the fire of your constitution and the fire of wine.
فَإِنْfor if تَكُنِis الرَّاحُwine تَنْفِيbanishes الهُمُومَcares
فَرُبَّتَهَاyet often it عَرَّضتْhas exposed لِلسَّقَامِto sickness
For though wine may banish cares,
For if wine banishes cares,
Many a time it has laid one open to sickness.”
yet often it has exposed one to sickness.”
