ودَّعْتُهاI bade her farewell ولهيبُand the flame of الشَّوْقِlonging فيin كبِدِيmy liver
والبَيْنُand parting يُبْعِدُputs distance بينbetween الرُّوحِthe soul والجسَدِand the body
I bade her farewell, with longing's flame within my liver,
while parting drove soul and body apart.

A farewell of two lovesick lovers, who could not say goodbye
except with an eye's glance or a hand's fingertips.
وحاذَرَتْand she feared أعينُthe eyes of الواشِيْنَthe talebearers فانْصَرَفَتْso she turned away

She feared the talebearers' eyes, and so turned away,
biting, in her anger, jujube-red fingertips with hailstone teeth.
فكانso was أَوّلُthe first عَهْدهits acquaintance العَيْنِthe eye يومَthe day نَأْتِshe departed

So the eye's first acquaintance, on the day she departed,
with tears was the heart's last acquaintance with fortitude.
