The heralds of Mihragan have approached us,
The harbingers of the festival have come near,
Announcing the season's delightful bounty.
Bringing good tidings of the excellence of time,
وَالهَدَايَاand gifts فِيat المَهْرَجَانِMihragan قَدِيْمَاًin former times

And gifts at Mihragan, in former times
And gifts in the festival were anciently
And today, are the custom of the landed noble.
And lately, of the customs of the village chief,
وَتَفَكَّرْتُand I pondered فِيon الهَدَايَاthe gifts وَفِيْمَاand on what
بَعَثَbrought forth الفِكْرُthought مِنْof لَطِيْفِsubtle المَعَانِيideas
And I pondered gifts, and what
And I pondered on the gifts and what
Thought brought forth of subtle ideas:
Thought roused of subtle meanings,
أَيُّwhat شَيْءٍthing أُهْدِيshall I give لِأَحْسَنِto the loveliest شَيْءٍbeing

What should I give to the loveliest being,
What thing shall I give to the best thing
In whom beauty is joined with benevolence?
Beauty and benevolence were paired in it?
فَرَأَيْتُso I found الأَشْيَاءَall things تَقْصُرُfall short عَنْof وَجْface (continued)

So I found all things fall short of a face
So I saw that things fell short of the as-
Too exalted for any peer to be seen beside it.

فَبَعَثْتُso I sent الَّتِيthe one that يَرَىhe sees مِنْهُfrom himself فِيْهَاin it

So I sent the one in which he sees, reflected from himself,
So I sent that in which may be seen in it
All that he cannot see in the garden.
All that is not seen in the garden,

A mirror sent to a mirror: back and forth passes
With a mirror unto a mirror, beauty
Beauty from it and from him—two mirrors.
Exchanged between it and it, two mirrors,

Sister of the sun of morning in form and brightness,
But without dazzling the eyelids.
Not closing the eyelids for sleep,

Lustrous in polish, its excellence in mirrors
Is that of your minds over other minds.
Is the excellence of your minds over minds,

Traced in it the shape of the circle exactly

And proportionately Euclid the Greek described it,

It has a shining rim of silver,
Of a collar shining with chrysolite
Through which the yellow of pure gold was made to flow.
In which the colour of sulphur was made to flow,

Thus it is like the halo encircling the full moon
So it is as the halo encompassing the full moon
With six nights gone by after eight.
For a sixth [day] after eight have passed.

For you, if you contemplate it, there is beauty within it,
For you in it, when you observe, a beauty
Whose excellence speaks of noble aspirations.
Informing of the excellence of noble wishes,

That it is set in a handle of Yemeni onyx.

Traced on it is the figure of Chosroes as if he
Khosrow represented your father amid crowns.
Were pictured on the crown,

Before it there was not in water a body
That contained itself without vessels.

The light has balanced its reflection; its outward course
Its reflection amended by rays so its beginning
Toward it and its return are equal.
To it and its return are equal,

It is a sun, so if your image one day
Shine within it, then you two are two suns.
Appeared in it, you are two suns,

Fearful one has seen and then recoiled without safety,

The worth of eyes is known through persons of distinction.
Of eyes may be known by entities.
