لَمَّاwhen رَأَيْتُI saw مَطَايَاهُمْtheir mounts مُعَقَّلَةًhobbled
وَدَمْعَتِيand my tear مِنْfrom حِذَارِdread of الْبَيْنِparting تَنْهَمِلُstreams down
When I saw their mounts hobbled,
When I saw their camels all packed up,
and my tears streamed down in dread of parting,
And my tears flowed from the pain of parting,
وَوَجَّهَتْand she sent word مِنْfrom وَرَاءِbehind السَّجْفِthe curtain تُخْبِرُنِيtelling me
أَنَّthat الخَلِيْطَthe company غُرُوبَat the setting of الشَّمْسِthe sun مُرْتَحِلُdeparting
and she sent word from behind the curtain to tell me
And she called to me from behind the curtain,
that the company would depart at sunset,
That the mixed company was leaving at sunset,
قُلْتُI said ارْفَعِيlift السَّجْفِthe curtain نَسْتَمْتِعْlet us enjoy بِمَوْقِفِنَاin our meeting
وَالشَّمْسُand the sun مَاwhat غَيَّبَتْhave hidden مِنْof وَجْهِكِyour face الكِلَلُthe canopies
I said, “Lift the curtain; let us enjoy our meeting,
I said, "Lift the curtain that we may enjoy our stance,
for the sun is what the canopies have hidden of your face.”
For the sun has not yet hidden your flawless face."
فَأَبْرَزَتْso she revealed وَجْهَهَاher face وَالشَّمْسُand the sun آفِلَةٌsetting
وَمَرَّand passed لَيْلٌa night وَلَمْand not يُرْحَلْbe saddled لَهُمْfor them جَمَلُa camel
So she revealed her face as the sun was setting,
She then revealed her face though the sun was setting,
and a night passed, but no camel was saddled for them.
And night passed with no camel leaving its place.
لَمْdid not يَشْعُرُواthey become aware بِغُرُوبِof the setting of الشَّمْسِthe sun إِذْwhen سَفَرَتْshe drew back the veil
عَنْfrom وَجْهِهَاher face فَأَضَاءَso shone السَّهْلُthe plain وَالجَبَلُand the mountain
They did not notice the sun’s setting when she unveiled
They did not notice the sunset when she traveled
her face, and the plain and the mountain shone.
From her face which lit up the plain and the hill,
حَتَّىuntil إِذَاwhen نَحْنُwe قَضَّيْنَاwe satisfied لُبَانَتَنَاour longing
وَغَيَّبَتْand she hid وَجْهَهَاher face فِيwithin الكِلَّةِthe canopy احْتَمَلُواthey departed
At last, when we had satisfied our longing,
Until when we had our fill of each other
and she had hidden her face within the canopy, they departed.
She hid her face in the darkness, and they bore the camel.
