لِلْصَّيْدِ لَمْ يُرَ مِثْلُهُ مِنْ بَاشِقِ
I am told you have a sparrowhawk, carefully chosen
For hunting, whose like has never been seen among sparrowhawks.

عَجِلاً فَيَنْقَضُّ انْقِضَاضَ الطَّارِقِ
It soars and vanishes in the air, then wheels back
Swiftly, swooping down like a shooting star.

خُضِبَا بِنَقْشِ يَدِ الفَتَاةِ العَاتِقِ
And it is as though its breast and its wing feathers
Were dyed with the tracery on a young maiden's hand;

فَأَعَارَهُنَّ نُحُولَ جِسْمِ الْعَاشِقِ
And as though love had settled in its limbs,
And lent them the leanness of a lover's body.

And talons like crescent moons, which time and again
Have bloodied the skilled falconer's palm.

Like the wind in speed, or like lightning.

And when the falconer calls it, you see it
Nearer and more obedient than an ardent lover.

And when the sandgrouse circles aloft in fear of it,
It can only be carried plunging down from on high.

Since it came to be, from hunting splendid geese.

Who surpass mankind in qualities and character.

And you have others like it and its equals,
From the bounty of the king, lavish giver and provider.

Life is nothing but setting out with it upon one's palm,
Among fair-faced youths, noble lords.
