تَجَنّتْshe accused unjustly وماand not ليmine فيin التَّجَنيِّthe unjust accusation مِنْany ذَنْبِfault
وأقرَرْتُand I confessed إذْalthough لَمْdid not أَجْنِcommit a wrong خوفاًout of fear منof الذَّنْبِsin
She accused me unjustly, though I was in no way at fault;
And I confessed, though I had done no wrong, for fear of sin.
ولوand if أنَّthat ماwhat بيis in me منof هواهاlove for her بِصَخْرةٍin a rock
لأَنَّتْit would surely groan منfrom الشَّوْقِlonging المبرحagonizing والكَرْبِand anguish
And were the love I bear her lodged within a rock,
It would surely groan from agonizing longing and anguish.
وهوّنَand eased ماwhat بيis in me بيتُa line شِعْرof poetry سَمِعْتُهُI heard it
تَغَنَّتْshe sang بِهِwith it يوماًone day معلِّلَةًentertaining الشُّرْبَthe drinkers
And a line of poetry I heard eased my suffering;
She sang it one day, entertaining the drinkers:
لعلَّperhaps الذيthe one who يَقْضيordains الأمُورَall affairs بِعِلْمِهِthrough His knowledge
He will bring you near بعدafter النأيseparation منto حَبَّةِthe core القَلْبِof the heart
“Perhaps He who ordains all affairs through His knowledge
Will bring you, after separation, near the heart’s core.”
