الحمدpraise للَّهِto God حتىeven مُقْلَتِيmy eye بَخِلَتْhas been miserly
عليَّtoward me بالدمعwith tears أَنْto أَشْفِيI soothe بهwith it كَمَديmy grief
Praise be to God—even my eye has begrudged
Praise be to Allah, though my eyelids were stingy
me tears with which to soothe my grief.
And spared me no tears to heal my wounds.
تَجْنيbrings about البَلاَءَaffliction علىupon قَلْبيmy heart وتُسْلِمُنِيand abandons me
ياoh ليتَهَاwould that it أَخَذَتْhad taken مماfrom what جَنَتْit wrought بِيَديby my hand
It brings affliction upon my heart and abandons me.
Misfortune assails my heart and leaves me
Oh, would that it had taken my hand to help me out of what it wrought.
If only it had taken what my hands reaped!
لوif أنَّهاthat it أَفْصَرَتْhad desisted عمّاfrom what تُلِحُّit insists بِهِon it
لمdid not تُمْسِreach evening مكْحُولَةَlined with kohl الأَجْفَانِthe eyelids بالسُّهْدِwith sleeplessness
Had it desisted from what it insists upon,
Had it looked away from what it insists on
it would not have reached evening with sleeplessness for kohl upon its eyelids.
It would not have touched the swollen eyelids.
