دَاوِcure خُمَارِيmy hangover بِكَأسِwith a cup of خَمْرِwine
وَأَحْيِand revive سُكْرَthe drunkenness of الهَوَىlove بِسُكْرِwith drunkenness
Cure my hangover with a cup of wine,
And revive love's drunkenness with drunkenness.
وَرَوِّقِand clarify المَزْجَthe mixing-water ذَوْبَmolten دُرِّpearls
وَشَعْشِعِand dilute الخَمْرَthe wine ذَوْبَmolten تِبْرِunminted gold
And clarify the mixing-water, like molten pearl,
And dilute the wine, like molten gold.
مُدَامَةٌwine عُتِّقَتْwas aged فَجَاءَتْso it emerged
كَلَمْعِlike the flash of بَرْقٍlightning وَضَوْءِand the light of فَجْرِdawn
A wine that was aged, then emerged
Like lightning's flash and dawn's light.
رَقَّتْgrew delicate فَكَانَتْso it became كَمَاءِlike the water of دِيْنِيmy faith
وَمَاءِand the water of دَمْعِيmy tears وَمَاءِand the water of شِعْرِيmy poetry
It grew delicate, becoming like the water of my faith,
And the water of my tears and the water of my poetry.
لاَdo not تُفْنِspend عُمْرَthe span of الزَّمَانِtime إِلاَّexcept
مَاwhat lies بَيْنَbetween قَلاَّيَةٍa monk's cell وَعُمْرِand a monastery
Do not spend the span of time except
Between a monk's cell and a monastery.
يَاO دَيْرَmonastery of مُرَّانَMurran كَمْhow many a غَزَالٍgazelle
فِيْكَin you وَكَمْand how many a رَوْضَةٍgarden وَنَهْرِand river
O Dayr Murran, how many a gazelle
Is in you, and how many a garden and river!
وَكَمْand how often تَطَرَّبْتُI thrilled مُسْتَهَامَاًlove-struck
إِلَيْكَtoward you إِذْwhen عِيْلَwas exhausted عَنْكَaway from you صَبْرِيmy patience
And how often I thrilled, love-struck,
For you, when my patience away from you was spent!
وَفِيand in يَمِيْنِيmy right hand شَمَالُthe left hand of شَمْسٍa sun
وَفِيand in شِمَالِيmy left hand يَمِيْنُthe right hand of بَدْرِa full moon
And in my right hand, a sun's left hand,
And in my left, a full moon's right.
حَدَائِقٌgardens كَفُّthe hand of كُلُّevery رَيْحٍwind
حَلَّتْhas untied بِهَاin them عَقْدَthe knot of كُلِّevery قَطْرِraindrop
Gardens where the hand of every wind
Has untied the knot of every raindrop.
كَأَنَّas though دُولاَبَهَاtheir waterwheel مُحِبُّa lover
يَحِيُّmoans (reading uncertain) وَالدَّمْعُand the tears مِنْهُfrom him يَجْرِيflow
As though their waterwheel were a lover,
Moaning, with tears streaming from him.
ثُمَّthen تَحَلَّتْthey adorned themselves ضُحَىat forenoon وَأَبْدَتْand revealed
عَرَائِسَاًbrides مِنْfrom حُلِيِّthe jewelry of زَهْرِflowers
Then at forenoon they adorned themselves and revealed
Brides fashioned from jewels of flowers.
فَالنُّوْرُso the light والطَّلُّand the dew فِيon رُبَاهُits hills
مَابَيْنَbetween نَظْمٍstringing وَبَيْنَand between نَثْرِscattering
So the light and dew upon its hills
Are now strung together, now scattered,
كَالدَّمْعِlike tears قَدْindeed حَارَwas bewildered فِيon رُبَاهُits hills
حُمْرٍred وَوَرْدِيَّةٍand rose-pink وَصُفْرِand yellow
Like tears bewildered upon its hills—
Red, rose-pink, and yellow.
وَرُبَّand many a يَوْمٍday قَطَعْتُI spent فِيْهِin it
عَظِيْمَgreat in قَدْرٍworth جَلِيْلَglorious in ذِكْرِremembrance
And many a day I spent there,
Great in worth, glorious in remembrance,
أَحْسَنَfiner مِنْthan يَوْمِthe day of مِهْرَجَانٍMihragan
وَيَوْمِand the day of أَضْحَىAdha وَيَوْمِand the day of فِطْرِFitr
Finer than the day of Mihragan,
And the day of Adha and the day of Fitr.
أَتْبَعْتُI followed إِثْمَthe sin of الهَوَىlove بِإِثْمٍwith another sin
فِيْهِin it وَوِزْرَand the guilt of الصِّبَاyouthful passion بِوِزْرِwith further guilt
I followed love's sin with another sin
There, and youthful passion's guilt with further guilt,
وَأُقْحُوَانٍand daisies نَقِيِّunsullied ثَغْرِmouth
Amid anemones with gleaming cheeks
And daisies with unsullied mouths,
وَابْنِand a son of دَلاَلٍcoquetry إِذَاwhen تَثَنَّىhe swayed
رَأَيْتَyou saw عَذْرَاءَa virgin بِنْتَa daughter of خِدْرِa curtained chamber
And a son of coquetry who, when he swayed,
You would see a virgin, a daughter of the curtained chamber.
يُدِيْرُhe passes around أَلْفَاظَهُhis words بِحِذْقٍwith skill
فِيْنَاamong us وَأَلْحَاظَهُand his glances بِسِحْرِwith magic
He passes his words around with skill
Among us, and his glances with enchantment.
فَلَسْتُso I am not آبِيrefusing وَلَوْand even if سَقُونِيthey gave me to drink
عَلَىto the sound of أَغَانِيْهِhis songs نِيْلَthe Nile of مِصْرِEgypt
So I would not refuse, even if they gave me
Egypt's Nile to drink to the sound of his songs.
مَاnot تَرَكَتْhas left لِيfor me المُدَامُthe wine هَمَّاa sorrow
يَضِيْقُis too narrow عَنْهُto contain it وَسِيْعُthe breadth of صَدْرِيmy breast
Wine has left me no sorrow
Too great for my spacious breast to contain.
إِنْnot هِيَit إِلاَّbut نُجُومُstars of سَعْدٍgood fortune
عَلَىupon أَكُفِّthe palms of الأَنَامِhumankind تَجْرِيglide
It is nothing but stars of good fortune
Gliding upon the palms of humankind.
