هَلْis there حَاكِمٌa judge يُعْدِيgrants redress عَلَىagainst ظَبْيَةٍa gazelle
ظَالِمَةٍunjust فِيin كُلِّall أَحْوَالِهَاher ways
Is there a judge to grant me redress against a gazelle,
Does an unjust ruler have power over a gazelle
unjust in all her ways?
Who is unjust in all her ways

Always turning away from me, so that no
Always turning away from me, so she doesn't
thought of me crosses her mind.
Remember me at all

عِنْدِيin my eyes وَأَغْرَانِيand prompted me بِإِجْلاَلِهَاto revere her
Small, yet love of her has made her great
She is small but my love for her
in my eyes, and prompted me to revere her.
Grew, and I respected her greatly
تَسْتَدْفِعُshe wards off الأَعْيُنَthe eyes عَنْfrom حُسْنِهَاher beauty

بِعُوذَةٍwith a protective charm مِنْfrom سُوءِwickedness أَفْعَالِهَاher deeds
She wards off eyes from her beauty
Her beauty averts all eyes
with a charm made from her wicked deeds.
With an amulet against her evil deeds

A maiden whose paternal uncles boast
A maiden who prides herself on her ancestors
of the Persians, and the Romans of her maternal uncles.
The Persians and the Romans and their clans
لَمْdid not أُطِعِI obey العُذَّالَthe reproachers فِيْهَاconcerning her وَقَدْand indeed
أَصْغَتْshe listened إِلَىto أَقْوَالِthe words of عُذَّالِهَاher reproachers
I did not heed the reproachers concerning her, though
I did not obey the slanderers about her though
she listened to her reproachers' words.
She listened to the words of her slanderers
تَمْضِيshe goes بِلَيْلٍby night فَإِذَاthen when أَقْبَلَتْshe comes
أَقْبَلَتْcomes الشَّمْسُthe sun بِإِقْبَالِهَاwith her coming
She goes by night, and when she comes,
She comes at night, and when dawn breaks
the sun comes with her coming.
The sun comes with her coming
قُلْتُI said وَقَدْand indeed أَبْصَرْتُهَاI saw her حَاسِرَاًdrawing back
عَنْfrom سَاقِهَاher leg فَاضِلَthe excess of أَذْيَالِهَاher hems
I said, seeing her as I drew back
I saw her leg bared
the trailing length of her skirts from her leg:
Of the trailing hems of her gowns
لَوْif لَمْnot يَكُنْwere مِنْof بِرَدٍhail سَاقُهَاher leg
لاَحْتَرَقَتْit would have burned مِنْfrom نَارِthe fire of خَلْخَالِهَاher anklet
Had her leg not been made of hail,
If not for the cold on her leg
it would have burned in her anklet's fire.
It would have burned from the fire of her anklets
