يَقُولُونَthey say تُبْrepent وَالكَأسُand the cup فِيin كَفِّthe hand of أَغْيَدٍa graceful youth
يَقُولُونَ تُبْ وَالكَأسُ فِي كَفِّ أَغْيَدٍ
وَصَوْتُand the sound of المَثَانِيthe second strings والمَثَالِثِand the third strings عَالِيis loud
وَصَوْتُ المَثَانِي والمَثَالِثِ عَالِي
They say, “Repent,” while the cup is in a graceful youth’s hand,
They say repent, and the cup’s in a sinner’s grip,
and the second and third strings ring out loud.
And the sound of lutes and flutes is loud and high.
فَقُلْتُso I said لَهُمْto them لَوْif كُنْتُI had أَضْمَرْتُinwardly intended تَوْبَةًrepentance
فَقُلْتُ لَهُمْ لَوْ كُنْتُ أَضْمَرْتُ تَوْبَةً
وَعَايَنْتُand I beheld هَذَاthis كُلَّهُall of it لَبَدَاsecond thoughts would surely have arisen لِيfor me
وَعَايَنْتُ هَذَا كُلَّهُ لَبَدَا لِي
So I told them, “Had I inwardly resolved to repent,
I said, Had I resolved to mend my ways,
and seen all this, I would have changed my mind.”
Seeing all this, it would surely make me try!
