قَدْindeed أَتَانَاcame to us الَّذِيthat which بَعَثْتَyou sent إِلَيْنَاto us
قَدْ أَتَانَا الَّذِي بَعَثْتَ إِلَيْنَا
وَهْوَand it is شَيْءٌa thing فِيin وَقْتِنَاour time مَعْدُومُunavailable
وَهْوَ شَيْءٌ فِي وَقْتِنَا مَعْدُومُ
What you sent to us has indeed arrived,
The one whom you sent to us has come
And it is something unavailable at present.
Though once non-existent, now a welcome guest
طَلْعَةٌa palm-blossom cluster غَضَّةٌfresh and tender أَتَتْنَاcame to us تُحَاكِيit resembles
طَلْعَةٌ غَضَّةٌ أَتَتْنَا تُحَاكِي
سَفْطَاًa casket فِيْهِinside it لُؤلُؤٌpearls مَنْظُومُstrung
سَفْطَاً فِيْهِ لُؤلُؤٌ مَنْظُومُ
A tender palm-blossom cluster came to us, resembling
A bud so fresh has come to recreate
A casket with strung pearls inside.
Necklaces strung with pearls in fine bequest
وَكَثِيْرٌand much مَاwhat قَلَّwas little عِنْدَكَto you عِنْدِيto me
وَكَثِيْرٌ مَا قَلَّ عِنْدَكَ عِنْدِي
إِذْsince حَبَانِيfavored me بِهَاwith it رَئِيْسٌa leader عَظِيْمُgreat
إِذْ حَبَانِي بِهَا رَئِيْسٌ عَظِيْمُ
And what is little to you is much to me,
Much I possessed was little in your eyes
For a great leader bestowed it on me.
When gifted by a lord so grand and wise
مَاnot جَوَادٌa generous man مَنْhe who جَادَgave generously بِالمَالِwith wealth لَكْنْbut
مَا جَوَادٌ مَنْ جَادَ بِالمَالِ لَكْنْ
نَcompletion of 'but' المُوَاسِيthe one who shares هُوَhe الجَوَادُthe generous man الكَرِيْمُthe noble one
نَ المُوَاسِي هُوَ الجَوَادُ الكَرِيْمُ
The generous man is not he who gives wealth, but
Not he who gives away mere wealth and gold
He who shares is the generous, noble man.
But he who gives his love, generous and bold
