I would give my life for her who goes forth in the morning,

and the sun then becomes eclipsed.

    Coquetry with [no] equal,

    and beauty beyond all description.

    Approaching, she shows you dawn,

and, departing, the darkness of night.

And the branches envy her figure,

    swaying and bending.

And she conceals a lover's affection,

and displays the indifference of one who turns away.

And she [knows] that I am lovesick,

and I know that she is lovesick.

And what keeps her from lamenting

    to us is her haughtiness.

    نِسْبَتُهُ لِلْمَريضِ مَوْصُوفَهْ

    We have an elder, one of Kufa's elders;

his connection with the sick man is noted.

If God turned his lice into sheep,

no one would hope to get a tuft of wool from him.
