ياO عليُّAli بْنَson of سُلَيْمانَSulayman وَياand O
مَعْدِنَmine of العِلْمknowledge ويَنْبُوعَand wellspring of الأَدَبْliterature
O Ali, son of Sulayman, and O
O Ali son of Suleiman, O mine of knowledge and spring of literature
mine of knowledge and wellspring of literature!
By my father and mother and He who desired and loved everything
بِأَبِيwith my father as ransom أَنْتَyou وأُمِّيand my mother والّذيand whatever
اشْتَهىI desire منamong كلِّevery شَئٍthing وأُحِبْand I love
May my father and mother ransom you, and whatever
Your complaints have caused my heart such agony
I desire and love among all things.
The like of which it has never endured before
كَسَبَتْbrought شَكْوَاكِyour illness قَلْبيmy heart لَوْعةًburning grief
ماnot أراهُI think it مثلَهاthe like of it قَطُّever اكْتَسَبْacquired
Your illness has brought my heart a burning grief
You did not become sick, but high position and dew did
whose like I do not think it has ever known.
And that is a wondrous thing
أنتyou لمdid not تَعْتَلَّyou fall ill لكنَّbut العُلاeminence
والنّدىand generosity اعتلاَّboth fell ill وذاand this شئٌa thing عَجَبْastonishing
You have not fallen ill; rather, eminence
Some people wrongly claimed
and generosity have both fallen ill—an astonishing thing.
That it was due to cold in the nerves
ولَقْدْand indeed أَخْطَأَerred قومٌsome people زَعَمُواthey claimed
أنّهاthat it منfrom فضلِexcess بَرْدٍcold فيin العَصَبْthe nerves
And indeed, some people erred in claiming
It is that brilliant mind, whose fire is the keenest
that it came from excess cold in the nerves.
And that excessively hot temperament
هُوَit ذَاكَthat الذِّهْنُthe mind أذْكَىkindled نَارَهُits fire
والمِزَاجُand the constitution المُفْرِطُexcessive الحَرِّheat التَهَبْflared up
It was that very mind that kindled its fire,
And indeed I said to Isaac - and Isaac
and the excessively hot constitution flared up.
With pains and illnesses is a physician -
ولقدand indeed قُلْتُI said لإسْحاقَto Ishaq وإسْand Is- (beginning of Ishaq)
حاقَ-haq (end of Ishaq) بالأوجاعin pains والأدْوَاءِand ailments طَبْskilled
And indeed I said to Ishaq—and Is-
How can the organs of a young man not become confused
haq is skilled in pains and ailments—
When each of his organs contains a thousand hearts
كيفَhow لاnot تَحْتَرُّgrow hot أعضاءُlimbs فَتًىa young man
كلَّeach عُضْوٍlimb مِنْهُof him فيهِin it أَلفُa thousand قَلْبْheart
"How could a young man's limbs not grow hot,
when each limb of his holds a thousand hearts?"
