Come early, for this is a cold morning,

and today is a day whose sky pours freely.

Snow, sunshine, and a morning cloud’s downpour—

so the earth is a blaze of white on every side.

She passed the night, her plains a peridot,

then by morning she had turned into a pearl.

As though, with the snows making her smile,

she were lent the mouth of the one I love.

As though hands in the air had scattered

pearls upon us, hastening to scatter them.

She grew white-haired, and was glad of it and rejoiced,

though I had known white hair to be unwelcome.

So drink amid the snow some watered wine,

as though it were an ember in its vessel.

Our town has been unveiled in white,

so unveil before us the cups in red.
