تَعَزَّbe consoled أَبَاO Abu (father of) بَكْرٍBakr المُرْتَجَىthe one in whom hope is placed
تَعَزَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ المُرْتَجَى
عَنِover the loss of الأَهْلِthe family وَالعُصْبَةِand the kinsfolk الفَارِطَهْdeparted
عَنِ الأَهْلِ وَالعُصْبَةِ الفَارِطَهْ
Be consoled, Abu Bakr, in whom hopes rest,
for the family and kinsfolk who have gone before.
وَمَاand has not ظَلَمَwronged المَوْتُdeath فِيin حُكْمِهِits judgment
وَمَا ظَلَمَ المَوْتُ فِي حُكْمِهِ
لَعَمْرَكَby your life حَيَّاًa living person وَلاَnor غَالَطَهْcheated him
لَعَمْرَكَ حَيَّاً وَلاَ غَالَطَهْ
And death has not, in its judgment, wronged
a living soul—by your life—nor cheated him.
وَمَنْand whoever يَكُis جَوْهَرَthe precious substance of هَذَاthis الفَتَىyoung man
وَمَنْ يَكُ جَوْهَرَ هَذَا الفَتَى
فَأَيْدِيthen the hands of المَنَايَاdeath لَهُfor him لاgather- (first part of لاقطة) قِطَهْ-ing (completes لاقطة)
فَأَيْدِي المَنَايَا لَهُ لا قِطَهْ
And whoever is of this young man's precious substance,
the hands of death will gather him.
وَلَكِنْbut بَقَاؤُكَyour remaining alive أَرْضَىhas appeased النُّفُوسَthe souls
وَلَكِنْ بَقَاؤُكَ أَرْضَى النُّفُوسَ
وَكَانَتْand they had been لِمَنْيَتِهِمْat their death سَاخِطَهْindignant
وَكَانَتْ لِمَنْيَتِهِمْ سَاخِطَهْ
Yet your survival has appeased the souls
that had been indignant at their deaths.
فَإِنْso if يَكُthere is عِقْدٌa necklace وَهَىhas come undone بَعْضُهُpart of it
فَإِنْ يَكُ عِقْدٌ وَهَى بَعْضُهُ
فَإِنَّthen indeed الذِيwhat بَقِيَremains الوَاسِطَهْthe central jewel
فَإِنَّ الذِي بَقِيَ الوَاسِطَهْ
So if a necklace has come undone in part,
then what remains is its central jewel.
